Inspiring Conversations with Mayra Garcia of GlowingBeautyLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Garcia.

Hi Mayra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and one of my passions is giving back to my community. I am the outreach director for LA Baby Cooperative which is a nonprofit organization that gives baby necessities to low-income & migrant Families.

My other passion is Makeup. Since I can remember I have always been drawn to anything and everything beauty. Growing up I would always find my way into my mom’s makeup and add on a little lipstick and blush on myself. As I got older makeup became part of my identity wearing it every day to school and using lunchtime to put makeup on my friends. As an adult, I would always be the first to volunteer to do someone’s makeup. For me, it was much more than just putting on some color on someone but rather watching them feel like a different person almost immediately and boosting up their self-confidence. Having helped someone feel confident in their own skin is what drew me to start my makeup career 12 years ago and open my own Makeup business GlowingBeatyLa ten years ago.

Looking back to when I started, second-guessing every move I made in my business and my own talent to where I am today having a business that is thriving and growing with now having a team I could not have done it without years of hard work and ongoing education in my trade paired with coffee, and very little sleep. Having a strong support system is key when you feel like giving up. I am very thankful for all of the unconditional motivation and support I have and still receive up to this day from those that care about me.

With my love for all things beauty and my passion for perfecting my trade, I knew that this was my calling from a young age.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur definitely comes with challenges but also can be very rewarding. Starting my own business meant investing my Money, time, and energy. Starting on my own I had to figure everything out myself along the way. It can be intimidating and discouraging at the beginning when you work so hard on your craft and get no bookings, or when your client is not happy with her service. to name a couple of the many struggles I have come across in my journey. What I have learned is that Patience, attitude, and a strong support system is what can make or break your business. Just like anything else I had to learn to be patient with my growth as an artist but also with my business. When I came across scenarios where things went wrong I had to learn to take those experiences as an opportunity to grow and change my perspective on how those challenges would prepare me for success in the future instead of giving up. My attitude had to be positive as much as I could to ensure that I was projecting that to my clients and help propel me to the next level in my business I am very thankful for my dear friend Yamileth who played a key role in my support system. She is also an entrepreneur and would always be there for me to provide a listening ear, shoulder to cry on, and give insights on how I could grow my business. together we would and still brainstorm on how we can continue to elevate ourselves and our businesses.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love about Los Angeles is the diversity of cultures. I love to see when we all embrace and celebrate one another. We have unity and that is a beautiful thing to see and be a part of.

Like many other cities, we are not near perfect and can definitely continue to push for a better system to help our homeless and low-income communities to help providing resources and opportunities.
