Inspiring Conversations with Marijane Chuang of Pet Wants Chino Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marijane Chuang.

Hi Marijane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Our dogs have always been a part of our family. Our rescue Scruffy had food sensitivity issues and had difficulties finding the right diet that suit him. And we didn’t want to go down the prescription diet route as our previous dog didn’t do so well. When we found Pet Wants, we saw how much Scruffy enjoyed the food, along with our other dog, Boba.

We realized that there was a need to bring a solution for pet parents like us closer to where we live. I enjoy working with people, but I love animals. So why not merry the two? After 17+ years of working in the biotech corporate world, I decided to take my sales and marketing experience and start a family business with my husband, Jesse. Combined with his years of experience in supply, logistics and operations experience helped with launching our mobile pet nutrition business, Pet Wants in the Chino Valley in the summer of 2020. It was in the height of the pandemic, but there was no better time to do as we were mobile, and we offered free local delivery to our pet parents, bringing them fresh kibble, nutritious treats and chews. Fast forward to today, we have helped and continue to help many pet parents improve their dogs and cats health and wellness. After all, a healthy pet is a happy pet who has the opportunity to live a long life with their families.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In life, the road is never smooth. The road can be bumpy with windy curves that eventually lead to great outcomes. We launched the business in the height of the Covid pandemic — July 2020. As a mobile business, we were challenged with promoting ourselves in the community. Our business relied on community public events to promote and create brand awareness. We were fortunate that the weekly Farmers Market in Chino Hills was deemed as an essential business that could re-open. That was our one market that we used to engage with pet parents and be a resource on providing education and awareness to understanding what you are feeding your cats and dogs that can lead to food allergies, food sensitivities or even digestive issues.

As a new business, it’s always a challenge to get the word out. However, we did not let the pandemic slow our launch down. We began to use social media as a way to market Pet Wants in our community by building a relationship with our audience through providing educational content and becoming a resource for pet parents. In addition, networking with other small businesses in the community was another challenge as there were no in-person events at that time. We are active members of the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce as they met weekly on zoom (eventually in person). As a result of these activities it has helped us build our brand and trust within the community that we serve.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Pet Wants Chino Hills is a pet nutrition company that helps pet parents with improving their pets health and wellness through nutrition. After all, our cats and dogs are part of our family. Our mission is to educate and create awareness with pet parents in taking a closer look as to what they are feeding their cats and dogs both in food, treats and chews.

We believe that Fresh is Best when feeding your furbabies. Our dry kibble is frequently made every 6-9 weeks in small batches with wholesome ingredients and at low temperatures so the nutrients are locked into the kibble for your furbabies to benefit from. And we sell by the pound so you only buy what your pet needs.

At Pet Wants Chino Hills, we offer customized solutions to help pet parents with common issues like itchy, dry skin, food sensitivities, food allergies and more. There’s not a one size fits all solution, we truly take the time to work with our pet parents to see how we can help. We offer complimentary nutritional consults over the phone or in-person in our Tailored Spaces suite at the Shoppes Chino Hills.

Pet Wants Chino Hills continues to offer free local delivery to Chino, Chino Hills and the surrounding cities. You can schedule your food, treats and chews deliveries as frequent as 2, 4 or 6 weeks. Follow us on Instagram @petwantschinohills to find our weekly farmers market and community events.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The Chino Valley is composed of two cities — Chino and Chino Hills. We love living here as it has the small-town feel where everyone knows you. It’s like a city in a Hallmark movie.

Both our kids go to school in the district, and we’ve made some great friends who are like family to us. We’re continuing to see our kids grow from Kindergarten and now in High School.

The people in our community are very supportive with small businesses like ours, especially that we reside in Chino Hills, and we continue to give back to our local schools and organizations.
