Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Melkonian-Maissian.
Hi Maria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Maria Melkonian-Maissian, I am born and raised in Glendale, CA. My parents immigrated from Armenia. Both have backgrounds in music and arts. My father was a sound engineer and my mother a soprano/opera singer. Creativity and art run in my blood. I was raised around other creatives and it contributed to my desire to pursue a career in the fashion industry. I went on to study fashion design at Woodbury University. Upon graduation, I had a career working in the fashion industry for top designers such as Michael Kors and Calvin Klein. I have always had a passion for design and bringing a brand to life through fashion. Working in the fashion industry has been a dream come true for me, and I have loved every moment of it. My favorite part of my career has been working with and training the staff in store, particularly mentoring other young women who are interested in careers in the fashion industry.
Being able to educate others about the industry and share my love for design has been incredibly fulfilling. Seeing the passion and creativity of others grow and develop under my guidance has been a true highlight of my career. I believe that by empowering the next generation of women and sharing our knowledge and experiences, we can make the fashion industry a more inspiring place that women can continue to grow in their careers even as they progress in the different seasons and stages of life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey to motherhood was one of the most challenging and painful obstacles I have faced in my life. It was especially difficult in the fashion industry, where the demands of the job often require long hours and a lot of travel. Balancing the demands of work and motherhood was a real struggle, and at times, it felt like I was being pulled in two different directions.
However, even though my priorities changed, my love and passion for doing something creative and supporting businesses continued to burn bright. I knew that I wanted to continue to work in a creative industry and help businesses grow, but I also needed to prioritize my family and my own well-being.
I had to make some difficult choices and sacrifices. I stepped away from the fashion industry to a more family-friendly corporate job so that I may focus on having my second child. What was only supposed to be for two years turned into five due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in the fashion industry and as a mother, as they ultimately led me to start my own business and create the work environment I always dreamed of.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
As a child, my favorite memories were always centered around playing with my siblings. We would come up with all sorts of imaginative games and act out what we wanted to be when we grew up. For me, that always involved designing and creating something new.
I loved to cut things up and use my creativity to make something that was uniquely my own. Whether it was transforming old clothes into something new or creating my own designs from scratch, I was always drawn to the world of fashion and design.
Looking back, I realize that those childhood games were not just a form of entertainment but a way for me to explore my passions and express my creativity. And while my career has taken me down many different paths since then, the joy and excitement I felt when creating something new remain a constant source of inspiration and motivation for me.
