Inspiring Conversations with Maple Moriji of Maple Moriji Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maple Moriji.

Hi Maple, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I worked as a software engineer for thirteen years until I lost my job in the Great Recession. After six months of no work, I decided to get a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. This was the best decision I’ve ever made. I learned all about different therapy modalities that I still use to this day. While it was tough getting my 3,000 clinical hours working in some of the most challenging settings, it was valuable experience for me. I have been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 2017 and have been working in private practice full-time since 2018. I see clients at two locations—Melrose and Long Beach—because I want to cover as wide a geographic area as possible. I love my work—every day is different for me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a therapist, I am faced with many challenging situations. Clients usually come in after experiencing pain and suffering in their lives and do not know what to do. I try my best to help them get better but sometimes I am unable to do so for various reasons. Furthermore, the issues clients bring to therapy can sometimes uncover issues that I need to address in myself. When I decided to become a therapist, I had already done extensive personal therapy and felt that I had worked through my issues sufficiently. But as it turns out, healing is a lifelong process.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Maple Moriji Counseling Services?
I accept all kinds of clients. This keeps things fresh and exciting for me and lets me work on many different kinds of issues. I tend to attract clients from diverse backgrounds and especially the LGBTQ+ community. Many have said they chose me because of my unusual background. I grew up overseas and bring a different perspective on life.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I read all kinds of books on many different subjects. They can be about artists that I admire, theoretical physics or psychology. I have not lost my interest in psychology since becoming a therapist! I also attend psychology conferences regularly, including overseas. It has been beneficial for me to meet with other therapists from around the world. Lastly, I have been meditating regularly since 2022 and it has improved my quality of life. My life has never been better.
