Today we’d like to introduce you to Mah Gomes.
Hi Mah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Originally from Brazil, moved to Los Angeles in 2020. Graduated in Law back home in Brazil but I’ve always been into the beauty industry.
I got here to do a cultural exchange where I’d live with an American family, but after just a few weeks it gone wrong and I saw myself with no place to go and no one to help me, with only $100 in cash.
I’ve always been a faithful person and I’ve always believed in God’s plans, I was sure I wouldn’t go back to Brazil because it wasn’t time yet, I had no idea what I’d do in that situation but I knew God was going to help me figure it out. Fortunately, God put angels in my life to help me and in a short period of time I was living in an apartment, working and happy.
After several months of saving every penny I was able to pay for my first nanoblading course from Brazil and today I’m an eyebrows specialist, met the love of my life here and I’m really happy doing what I love.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
English is my second language, when I got here two years and a half ago completely by myself in a different country that I didn’t know before it was really hard. When I first started taking clients the language was still a big challenge for me and I’d feel really insecure about it, I remember when I had my first client I rehearsed for a week what I’d have to say and how to explain my treatment so I could feel more confident, even so I remember I was so nervous and hoping the client wouldn’t want to talk about random stuff with me haha
We’ve been impressed with Mah Gomes Beauty, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As I said I’ve always been into the beauty industry even though I have a law degree.
I wanted to find something that I would love and at the same time would be able to touch others people’s lives somehow.
As soon as I found out my passion for eyebrows, I also realized how the USA was in lack of really natural-looking microblading, that’s when I decided to professionalize myself in Brazil, which is nowadays a reference in natural eyebrows procedures, and after many courses, studies and adaptations I developed a technique with my own signature, the MG NanoBrows treatment.
My technique is done 100% free hand, which means I do not use any pattern measurements to shape the eyebrows, I do it all based on the client’s bone structure and style, respecting their natural shape and thickness, I fill in the eyebrows strategically according to the need of each eyebrow, this way we’re able to create hair strokes so fine, delicate and strategically placed that they do look like the real hair.
Besides the extremely natural result, my technique is also a treatment since I combine the use of a special serum rich in vitamins that is deposited into the skin through the micro-scratches made and it acts directly on the hair follicle stimulating the growth of new hair and preventing hair loss. The most rewarding thing is when I see the smile and emotion on my client’s faces when they see their eyebrows for the first time.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
A lot of times in life an apparent misfortune is a true blessing in disguise. Sometimes we don’t understand why we’re going through something but in the future, it will all make sense. Trust that everything happens for a reason, trust in God’s plan or the universe, and know that every experience is an opportunity to learn priceless lessons and evolve.
