Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Wann.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I was always organized. The one who cleaned the house, the one who kept everyone’s lives in order. I just thought it was normal… Honestly, I didn’t realize it was a “gift” until I became a mom and watched my daughter Ellie grow into my little mini-me. When she was two, her toys were always organized by size and color, and she cleaned things for fun. FOR FUN! Who does that!? Wait, I do…this is when the thought of turning my passion into a career started.
At the same time, I was working with my husband in real estate, and I would help our clients prep their homes for the market. When you are a realtor, you see a lot of homes, and I realized that people needed my help. I decided to launch Coastal Organizing Company and make it my side hustle. However, after a few months of doing it, it became a full-time job. I decided to jump all in. A few weeks after I made this decision, I found out I was pregnant with my second. I realized that I would need to start building out a team pretty quickly if I was going to keep business going in 9 months. By the time my son came, I had a team of three organizers. They thankfully kept projects going, and I would stop by to check-in. I even would bring my son from time to time.
Fast forward to now (five years later), I have a team of seven, a 1,200 sq ft warehouse, a Ford Transit cargo van and we help over 150 clients a year in Orange County. We do travel and have even helped clients in LA, Montana, and Napa,
I am so grateful for my team and I couldn’t do it without them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been in business for five years, and there have been so many ups and downs. The biggest struggle of all was during COVID. Like many small business owners, I had to navigate shutting down, opening back up, and all the changes I had to make within my business. It was a difficult time.
Overall, running a business has not been smooth by any means, and I have sacrificed a lot to get to where I am today. But honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. What I have learned is so valuable. I am also able to model to my two kids (ages 4 and 7) how to be a great mom and run a business all at the same time.
I look at my obstacles/challenges as opportunities. This may sound odd, but I would choose a bumpy road every time if given the choice.
