Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Oberle.
Hi Kelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a student-athlete at Northwestern, I experienced the ups and downs of juggling multiple responsibilities and positive and negative thought patterns.
After graduating, I moved to Southern California and started my corporate career in Marketing and Sales Management. I pursued a variety of roles and responsibilities and started to notice a theme – I continually struggled with stress, not feeling fulfilled, lacking confidence, and being pulled in multiple directions. To climb out of this, I spent time learning breathwork, mindfulness, and stress management tools to help cope with the stressors I was facing. In addition, I had extensive training in emotional intelligence, positive psychology, and character strengths to try to find my why. I found myself working in environments where individuals were knocked down and easily knocked off track. It reminded me of the teamwork struggles I had witnessed as both a player and coach throughout my athletic career.
I realized I was unhappy. Most of the time at work I was not feeling well, mentally or physically. I knew that if I could change myself, I could help others change themselves as well.
I dreamt of creating services that provide a foundation to build resilience, leadership, positive mindset, and teamwork – all the skills a person needs to not only survive in this crazy world, but to thrive by becoming the best version of themselves, happy and content in their skin.
I recognized that these skills can be taught at any age. I left my corporate position and started Access Human Potential to focus on teaching the skills to overcome life’s biggest challenges, including low self-esteem, low self-confidence, the ability to bounce back from failures/errors/mistakes, and the ability to succeed despite life’s challenges. With a strategic focus on positive psychology, breath work, and mental mindset training, Access Human Potential creates a workout plan for the mind, turning struggling corporate and athletic teams and individuals into well-adjusted, confident, and productive members of society.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road, but a very rewarding road. When I made the decision to start my own company, I knew that I would sacrifice some of the real and perceived stability of working in an organization. When I resigned towards the end of 2019, my plan was to take a little time off and then get started in the first part of 2020. Well, that was not the best timing workwise, but for my family it was perfect.
I was able to be at home to help the kids transition to online schooling, and after a few months, I was able to use my education around stress management and building resilience to create coaching and training programs to help both individuals and organizations. It took a longer time to focus on athletes – just due to how the Pandemic affected sports. I had to put that piece on hold for most of 2020. Once athletic teams started getting back on the field/court I was able to start providing those services – and they are very much needed.
Another obstacle/challenge was I had originally planned on doing most of my work on site and with the pandemic in full swing, I had to restructure my programs to be successfully delivered online. With 3 kids doing online school and me needing to do my client programs online – I had to upgrade my technology, internet and home office space. I had to incorporate the tools I have been teaching into my own daily practices to keep my sanity and minimize my stressors. It definitely was a great learning experience of which tools were helpful based on the situation!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Access Human Potential?
From the locker room to the boardroom, Access Human Potential empowers you to thrive! Gain the skills to become effective leaders and teammates with confidence and resilience.
Access Human Potential uses scientifically proven methodologies to build strength of character, rise above difficult situations and thrive through positive self-talk, mistake recovery and self-awareness to incorporate these values and strategies into the DNA of a team. We tailor programs that use positive psychology and mindset to build resilience and determination.
For Corporate teams we help in the following areas:
- Overwhelmed and burnt out
- Low self-esteem
- Low engagement
- Poor teamwork
- Coping skills
All the emotional and engaging situations that keep people from living their best lives. Interestingly, these are the same issues that contribute to negativity in the workplace, at home, and in extracurricular activities. With the right tools, awareness, and understanding of how to apply these tools, more people everywhere can achieve the happy, healthy, fulfilling life they desire, which gives them the positive energy to contribute better at work, home, and in their relationships.
Happy people stay at their jobs longer and contribute to a better workforce culture. These attributes increase engagement and reduce turnover. When people are happy, they communicate better, they are mindful of others, and they bounce back from failures faster, moving on to the next success.
Healthy-minded people solve problems faster, better, more completely, strengthening priorities so that the business can be reimagined by focusing on what matters most and directing that focus to make the highest impact.
For Athletic teams – we empower coaches and teams struggling with problematic behaviors, dejected attitudes, low productivity, high-stress environments, and low attendance who want to affect their athletes’ lives in a positive way. We work with coaches who want to become more innovative in their approach to cross-team dynamics and collaborations. We focus on improving the mindset of athletes and athletic teams. Imagine your team with a toolbox of life skills and resilience training to turn around a losing streak, improve team relations, and set up each athlete for a lifetime of confidence and success.
When you want to pivot negative mindsets toward positivity as a lifestyle change to reduce overall stress, that’s when you include Access Human Potential.
We work with people in a number of ways including workshops and coaching.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When you are just starting out, it’s important to remember that success is measured in a variety of ways; don’t compare your journey with others. Periodically check in with what you are doing and why you are doing it. It is ok to change your direction when you learn new information. It’s important to understand the finances – if this isn’t your strength, make sure to reach out to professionals who specialize in it. I think this is important for all aspects of business – it is really rare to be an expert in all areas, so reaching out to specialists can really help you stay on track and save your sanity.
Creating a plan for where you are going is really important. Not having a plan creates a lot of additional stress. When I left in 2019, I had made a plan, done some work on nights and weekends and had a pretty good idea of where I was going. Even though I had to tweak my plan due to unforeseen circumstances, I feel like if I wouldn’t have had a foundational plan, I would not have been able to sustain my business.
Also, try to find people who you can bounce ideas off of. I worked with a business coach to help me strategize – even though I do this for other companies and individuals, I think it was really important to have an independent person give me feedback and help stabilize the direction you are moving in.
