Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Meinster.
Hi Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
PickUp USA Fitness is now a national basketball gym franchise with locations across the country. It has been quite an eleven-year journey.
We started out in a warehouse in Irwindale, CA with our first gym back in 2012. It took us about a year of planning, fundraising, and facility searching to get the doors open.
Since then, the concept has really taken off, and now we are the largest basketball gym chain in the country.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any entrepreneurial journey, our path has not always been smooth. We had a very slow start, and it took us about a year to build a decent membership base.
The business started to really grow towards the end of 2013, and by 2016 we were putting together our expansion plans through a franchise model.
We started opening franchises in 2017 and were hitting our stride. Then COVID shut down all of our locations in March of 2020. That was scary. Fortunately, we were able to reopen pretty quickly and the demand for our services didn’t skip a beat. In fact, 2020 turned into our best year on record, and we have grown ever since.
We’ve been through a lot, but it has made us stronger as a system. We have our incredible team of franchise owners to thank for our resilience and growth!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
PickUp USA is a one-stop basketball shop for youth and adults.
For the youth, we offer youth basketball development leagues, group basketball training, private basketball training, and many other basketball-related services for recreational and competitive youth hoopers.
For the adults, we have full-weight rooms, PickUp basketball with referees, basketball tournaments, and basketball training.
To date, PickUp USA has 52 franchise agreements signed, with 20 locations open or under construction across the country. Our focus on basketball is what sets us apart from other gym chains and fitness franchises.
I’m most proud of the impact we have on the communities we serve. We are way more than a gym. We become a big part of people’s lives.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is being able to make a living doing what you love. Owning a business is challenging, but it is incredibly awarding. There are low lows and high highs in the journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
The best part about my job is that I not only get to do what I love for a living, we get to provide that opportunity to others around the country who we partner with to open PickUp USA franchises. It’s an honor and a privilege to do what we do.
