Today we’d like to introduce you to Jiayun Zhang.
Hi Jiayun, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my own law firm during the pandemic, driven by several factors. Firstly, becoming a mother inspired me to seek greater flexibility in order to spend more time with my son. Additionally, I recognized that I had developed a substantial client base over the years through my immigration law practice. With the encouragement of my husband, I made the decision to give it a shot, and JZ Law Group, PLLC was officially established!
I wouldn’t describe it as an easy journey starting from scratch, but I must say that I was fortunate enough to receive substantial support from my family, friends, and clients. My husband, Gongqi Li, has been an incredible partner the whole time, taking on a significant role in caring for our baby, including changing diapers, bathing, and assisting with the baby’s exercises. During the initial months following Jeffrey’s birth, my mom provided exceptional support by taking care of me while I focused on tending to the baby. My friends have been strongly supportive of my business, acting as my marketing and PR specialists. They have played a vital role in various aspects, from helping me choose the law firm’s name to organizing my speeches. Moreover, with everything transitioning to a virtual format during the pandemic and the presence of a baby making in-person meetings challenging, I am grateful for my understanding and considerate clients. They have been accommodating and readily accepting telephone or video meetings.
Once I took that first step, everything began to fall into place. I found a rhythm where I could accomplish more focused and intensive work during the baby’s nap times. When Jeffrey was awake, I strived to spend as much time with him as possible. I would have him nearby while I engaged in physical exercise and would even discuss my case strategies and new business ideas with him, and he would respond with a puzzled expression or a giggle. Work can occasionally be stressful and dull, but interacting with the baby can be truly rejuvenating. When Jeffrey is at daycare, I have more weekday hours to concentrate on work. My husband and I take turns reading him stories or teaching him songs when he’s at home. During the weekends, we are determined to invest quality parenting time with him. We schedule playdates, take him on two-day trips, or study together at museums.
When it comes to my work, I have a genuine passion for it. Working with clients from diverse backgrounds is a rewarding and pleasant experience, and every time their problems are resolved or their cases are approved, I feel a deep sense of happiness for them and pride in my own accomplishments. I believe that my honesty and professionalism have left a lasting impression on many of my clients. As a result, they often return to me when they or their friends require assistance, which is how I have nurtured and expanded my network of connections. I tend not to rush and take steady steps forward each time. Finally, we will all reach our desired destination.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For business owners of startups or small companies, one of the most challenging issues is effective time management. As we lack specialized teams or professionals due to the associated costs, I have had to take on multiple roles in addition to my role as an attorney, such as accountant, marketing specialist, editor, paralegal, and office manager. When necessary, my husband even steps in as an IT consultant. Balancing these various responsibilities is particularly challenging for a new mom. I feel a sense of guilt when I’m unable to be there for Jeffrey when he needs me or when I miss important moments in his growth and development.
