Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Wolk.
Jason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
AWOW was started as a grassroots effort to share the stoke of surf therapy with a select few children suffering from special needs. We initially commenced our non-profit doing private events at Hollister Ranch in 2013. The demand for our services and therapy grew rapidly, and volunteer support was robust.
Now we are a national non-profit with our home on the west coast and we have an east coast chapter.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When a non-profit is serving a community, the finances needed to produce surf events have always been a challenge. Raising money is equally as important as the therapeutic surf services we provide.
We are not a rich charity. Generally speaking, 85% of the funds raised go directly into the production of surf events enabling donors to see their funds directly impact families.
Being run by volunteers, organizing them with proper leadership is a core part of our success.
We’ve been impressed with A Walk On Water (AWOW), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our brand was created to resemble a motorcycle gang, with a monochromatic design and allure. Our appearance is cool, and we wanted to create a culture which would compel others to be a part of it.
While there are other surf therapy organizations out there, we are confident we are the best int he world at what we do. We are considered to be the elite providers of surf therapy because of our infrastructure, organization and personal attention. We are singular in the space because we focus on the individual experience of the athletes while offering a day of respite for the family at the beach.
When athletes are not surfing tandem with a pro or semi-pro surfer turned surf instructor, we offer other activities and services on the beach. We offer music, art, massages, and general counsel to families seeking intel on services offered for families with special needs.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The success of our Org is directly related to its Board Members and volunteer base. We employ established and developed individuals on the Board of Directors who each have their own careers and success in life; translating personal success into a charitable cause helps us retain the values of humanity, ethics, and hard work.
The longevity and premium experiences provided are successful due to the amazing volunteer base which AWOW draws.
