Inspiring Conversations with Enid Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Enid Harris.

Hi Enid, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a costume designer for film and television for over 25 years. The projects I worked on can be found on IMDB (International Movie Data Base). It was a very exciting business to be in with travel to many locations…but very long hours and time away from family and friends was taking its toll. I was asked by one of my styling clients to update the look of her home. I have always loved interior design and had done some small jobs for friends but did not think I was qualified to take on a 10,000 square foot Spanish Revival! The client assured me I could do it and gave me access to wonderful artisans that had worked on her home many years prior. I could not say no to this incredible opportunity!

Looking back, it was a pretty seamless transition. Costume design and interior design are similar in that they both require a knowledge of scale and budget (and having taste!). It was almost like costume design prepared me for my next career!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road! As in all businesses, there have definitely been bumps along the way. The challenges vary. Sometimes what the client wants does not fit the budget. They change their mind. Upholsterers do not always follow the notes. The client’s fabric choices get discontinued.

Things will inevitably go wrong as you rely on several entities to come together and make a complete story. Part of a designer’s job is communicating and problem-solving. People tend to think that all we do is shop for beautiful things with other people’s money. The truth is that there are so many moving parts that need attention and when something goes wrong, it’s the designer’s job to play troubleshooter, therapist, negotiator and CFO!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I love construction as much as doing interior design. My favorite jobs are gut remodels when you’re starting from scratch on a blank canvas and the possibilities are endless. I am currently working on a condo built in the 70s….the kitchen was not only dated but lacked a “work triangle” which is a concept used to determine efficient kitchen layouts that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. I re-designed the kitchen so my client, who loves to cook, has a kitchen that’s not only beautiful but works!

What matters most to you?
It’s very fulfilling when clients love their new space and feel their dream was realized.

I am passionate about climate change and how it will impact future generations.

I’m an animal lover and am devastated about species going extinct because of man’s choices.

Traveling the world has influenced the way I think and see. It has made me more compassionate and expansive about others. I’m always looking for the next adventure.
