Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Gerald.
Hi Elizabeth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m the mother of Marcie Gerald, my beautiful daughter Marcie was an honor roll student, she had dreams of going to Harvard law, she was a state finalists in the pageant, she had a great future ahead of her, all that changed after she was brutally raped, she was 14, when the attack happened, she suffered from post-traumatic stress, depression, afraid of males… I did get her counseling, but there is no magic pill, going through trial was too much, my daughter ended up taking her life… so after my daughter’s death, people said to me black people don’t kill themselves, but in the black community we, have more suicide than homicide, but because of the stigma, we don’t talk about it, people would rather say, they lost their love one, from nature causes, then suicide, so I started mjgmovement and Marcie Marvels, we advocate, help, sexual assault victims, domestic violence victims, suicide prevention, mental illness, I have women from all over the world reaching out me. We help find housing, we go to court, we help, get orders of protection, we do what each individual needs us to do… we have clients in, every state, we travel, all, over…
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, it was harder than it is now. It’s still no walk in the park… we work with people dealing with depression, grieving families, rape victims, domestic violence, etc., but I will say it’s much more easier…
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Well, I’m the only mom that reaches out to everybody. I reach out to all the moms, who have lost a child because the pain is the same, our babies are not coming back, we feed the homeless, we help, get counseling, we work with sexual assault victims, domestic violence victims, gun violence victims, we do what we can, anybody can reach out to us…
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The best advice I can give anyone is to love your kids, don’t be ashamed to, get help, talking to a counselor, therapist, Psychiatrist. Everybody goes through something, at some point of their lives… take care of yourself first.
