Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Crystal I. Lee.
Hi Dr. Lee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started LA Concierge Psychologist after many years of running programs at a non-profit. I wanted to return to serving clients directly versus managing programs and people who, in turn, served others. I remembered that I became a clinical psychologist to work with clients, not become an administrator. So I left and created LA Concierge Psychologist, which started as a one woman show. It started as a boutique private practice serving primarily emerging adults who were struggling to transition to adulthood (also known as “failure to launch”) on the Westside of LA. I started with providing therapy and college transition/gap year consultations.
In recent years, we’ve expanded to three clinical psychologists (soon to be four!). We also expanded who we work with further, supporting autistic adults, adults with ADHD, and professionals struggling with work-life balance and mental health issues. I also provide adult autism assessments.
We proudly provide neurodiversity-affirmative care, which is, unfortunately, a true rarity in our field. Also, with the rise in popularity of video conferencing during the pandemic, we are now serving clients all across California via teletherapy. I personally also see clients throughout Nevada.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Thankfully, the road has been fairly smooth. We’ve experienced tremendous growth the past year. Unexpectedly, the biggest challenge has been finding more high-quality, neurodiversity-affirmative clinical psychologists to join the LA Concierge Psychologist team. Trying to find psychologists has made it strikingly clear that there is a serious lack of adult autism and ADHD specialists, particularly those who use a neurodiversity-affirmative perspective. This has made me start thinking about possibly creating a training program in the future.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
LA Concierge Psychologist is a boutique group therapy practice based in the Westside of Los Angeles. We serve clients throughout California via teletherapy, and I also see clients in Nevada.
We specialize in neurodiversity-affirmative care for adolescents, emerging adults, and adults. We primarily focus on autism and ADHD and co-occurring mental health struggles, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. We also serve successful yet unhappy professionals, typically addressing issues around work-life balance, anxiety, depression, and relationship struggles (romantic or familial). In addition to therapy, I provide adult autism assessments, which can be conducted 100% via secure video chat.
Being truly neurodiversity-affirmative sets us apart from other therapy practices. Sadly, many mental health professionals have outdated or misinformed ideas about adult autism and ADHD. Oftentimes, these clinicians are unknowingly ableist, which can cause great harm to autistic and ADHD clients; the mental health field has quite a bit of catching up to do. It’s quite sad how many horror stories we’ve heard from clients who found us after trying to work with other therapists first.
Additionally, we’re very proud to be LGBTQIA+ affirming as well as skilled in working with black, indigenous, and people of color. We’re very comfortable working with the intersectionality of diverse identities.
What matters most to you? Why?
It is very important to me that all of our psychologists provide high-quality, culturally competent care to our clients. Too often, marginalized communities are either overlooked completely or treated from the perspective of the majority. We want to provide effective, culturally sensitive care to all communities.
As such, our psychologists all consider themselves life-long learners. We recognize that we need to continually educate ourselves in order to provide the best care possible for our clients.
