Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Le.
Hi Dana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Texas, where I was constantly told that I was doing too much. While my peers and family focused their energy on one thing, I was into dancing, doing well in school, maintaining a social life, and leading organizations. I didn’t feel supported or understood much in Texas. But then I moved and lived in the largest tech hubs of America – New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles – where I finally met people who had similar mindsets in pursuing multiple passions too. My favorite city culture has been Los Angeles, where I’ve met other multi-hyphenated individuals who have different jobs, hobbies, and interests. Here, I’ve been able to be a startup founder, boxing coach, fashion model, content creator, advisor, and digital nomad. This lifestyle has given me an interdisciplinary approach of operating, incredible accolades (Forbes 30 Under 30, TEDx talk, LinkedIn Top Voice), and a more diverse network of industry professionals ranging from fitness to creatives to tech.
Most of my time is dedicated to healthcare innovation. I’ve been a patient in multiple settings for different issues, and I rarely felt “taken care of” because of the heavy administrative tasks, archaic processes and environments, and long queues. Thus, I’ve built seven accelerators/innovation programs that can support people in building new ideas/solutions that can improve healthcare delivery, created a consortium of 30+ hospitals from around the world, and advised 50+ startups on selling and piloting with large healthcare organizations. I also worked on generating payment innovation models between insurance companies and hospitals. Utilizing this background and my personal interest in travel, I built a startup called Wander Health, a medical concierge company that connects travelers to English-speaking doctors while abroad. We offer same and next-day urgent care appointments via house calls or in-clinic with reputable doctors.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have, unfortunately, been an active user of the healthcare system. My medical concerns have ranged from cysts to broken bones to condition maintenance. More recently, I had left my corporate job to pursue building my own startup. But within one month, I had to get surgery on both feet. It took months to recover, which hindered me from attending networking events and operating at my peak capacity.
These personal experiences have given me more context on how to support other patients by flexing my healthcare administration’s expertise.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wander Health?
Wander Health is a medical concierge startup that helps travelers get access to healthcare while abroad. About 40% of Americans get sick or injured while traveling, and finding healthcare in a foreign country can be difficult. Instead of calling multiple clinics found on Google to figure out the services they offer, speak the same language, have availability, and price, our real-time booking platform offers a curated network of English-speaking doctors from around the world. We offer same and next-day urgent care appointments via house calls and in the clinic. Think of us as the international One Medical.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
COVID-19 accelerated healthcare innovation and health tech adoption by the public. It sheds light to the gaps in different healthcare systems around the world. People want to have more visibility and take control of their health so that’s why I built something that can supplement traveling lifestyles, especially as revenge and corporate travel increases.
