Inspiring Conversations with Dairian Roberts of Humbled By Motherhood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dairian Roberts.

Hi Dairian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science, I had no idea what I wanted to do! I ultimately decided to pursue a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (OT) and had dreams of a career in hand therapy. I spent the first five years of my career in hand therapy before I decided to do something different.

After the birth of my first child, I was so shocked about the lack of comprehensive, holistic, culturally competent postpartum care and became so passionate about helping other women during this huge life transition.

While on maternity leave, I decided not to return to my hospital-based position and took my first postpartum doula training. Part of the training included an introduction to lactation, and I was captivated!

When I finally decided to return to work, I began working in the early intervention system, supporting families with all things related to development and feeding. I continued my lactation training and in 2018, I started a private practice to serve families.

Currently, my private practice is focused on providing compassionate and comprehensive feeding and development services throughout the South Bay Los Angeles area.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are many systematic barriers to becoming an IBCLC. My biggest obstacle was finding a lactation mentor to complete my hands-on clinical hours. Many of the IBCLCs I reached out to refused to accept me as an intern, but I am so grateful for the abundance of knowledge and support from all the IBCLCs that decided to pour into me along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Humbled By Motherhood. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Humbled by Motherhood provides holistic and comprehensive services for infant feeding and development. Exclusive nursing, exclusive formula feeding, and every combination in between, in my practice I blend occupational therapy and lactation consultation with complementary modalities such as craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, and massage to improve feeding and development outcomes. Using a whole-body approach allows for a more comprehensive session and faster results for feeding and development challenges.

Families deserve individualized support regardless of how they choose to feed their babies because feeding is SO much more than nutrition.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
If I wasn’t helping them and other families with feeding, I would be a YouTube woodworking DIYer!
