Hi Courtney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
To understand my dedication to my new business venture, you’ll need to understand my story. I’m first, an only child of first-generation parents from West Africa. I was raised to exceed professionally and financially through education. I was destined for greatness with an understanding with my family that I would be a Doctor. It wasn’t until I was exposed to the real world on my own in college that my whole life changed. From the moment I started working in college for a self-made multi-millionaire as an Executive Assistant, I knew that I wanted to be a part of that life. After being exposed to entrepreneurship, I continued to work under several CEOs and Executive Directors throughout my professional career. I fell in love with these individuals’ determination, work ethic, financial freedom and the ability to manage their time however they wanted to. I changed my major in college when I turned 20 from pre-med to business finance and it was a wrap from there. From age 20 to 33, I started several businesses until I found the right niche in Health and Wellness.
Throughout my health and body image journey from high school to my young adult years, I struggled with weight loss. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I realized that I had to make a lifestyle change. I vowed to stick to a low carb diet for the remainder of my life in hopes of improving my health. From May of 2020 to December of 2020, I lost a total of 50 pounds with only changing my food choices, without any exercise. In 2021 I noticed I needed a boost to keep me going. I took it upon myself to research nontraditional ways for weight management and I came across the Body Sculpting Industry. I booked my first session with an old colleague who had started the business and I became hooked. During my session, I saw a noticeable difference in my body and it clicked. I loved how I felt and I wanted other people to feel this too. The instant results from my body sculpting session made me want to continue to do the right things that were aligned with my body goals to keep my results. I drank more water, started to exercise and continued eating even healthier. It was almost like this was a hidden secret that I had revealed and I couldn’t get enough of it. I mean, we all love instant gratification and I wanted to be the one that inspired people to reach their body and weight management goals. And so Shaped Secretz was born.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part yes, due to great preparation and planning. The only area of improvement we see that we need is more exposure of the great work we do for our clients.
Shaped Secretz opened up its doors December 19, 2021 and we can say that we have two accomplishments that are a pretty big deal to us. Not only were we able to negotiate our lease with an amazing deal in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, but we were able to self-fund the construction work for the creation of four rooms in our studio space.
Our second accomplishment being able to see the results of our clients after completing only one session. I find it so rewarding to know that we helped someone feel better about themselves. When you are able to see the fruits of your labor through someone else, it motivates you to keep striving to do more for others. Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The biggest risk that I’ve taken would be starting this business without first testing the waters. From taking my classes and receiving certification, I jumped right into looking for a location to lease before even obtaining clients. I just knew that with proper planning, God’s grace and dedication to my goals, that I would succeed.
The drive that I have to succeed sometimes overwhelms me, but what helps is that I remember that I have to take it one day at a time. If I continue to do something every day towards my goals, all the progress or what I also like to say “compound interest” will surely show up with time. I know it sounds so cliche but it really is true; consistency is the key to success. Just keep pushing forward every day, continuously update your to-do list daily and knock those things out. Every three months, look back at what you’ve accomplished and set new goals for the next three months. When you do that constantly, you’ll see your goals start to shift and move forward toward your dreams.
To accomplish your dreams, you do have to be a risk taker. My definition of being a risk taker is moving forward with something without really knowing what the outcome will be. Having faith and believing in yourself are the two things that you need in order to feel more secure about taking that risk. When you have confidence in yourself, in all that you do, taking a risk starts to look like a challenge that you can’t wait to get started on. And that’s where I see myself, constantly looking for my next challenge, my next goal. One thing I do know is that when I finally get to the other side of taking that risk and it becomes an accomplishment, I’m even more excited to share my story. We all have one, what’s yours?
