Inspiring Conversations with Cora Hirashiki of Fat Moon Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cora Hirashiki.

Hi Cora, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a literature major at UC Santa Barbara and always wanted to leverage the power of storytelling for good. After a career path that began in entertainment, I eventually found a home for what I love doing through impact marketing. I’ve since founded Fat Moon Creative, where my team and I share a passion for social media and digital marketing to amplify the mission and messages of socially-conscious brands and nonprofits. From the LA Art Show to sustainable fish farms to nonprofits working to save our oceans, we’re working with serious disruptors and innovators who aren’t playing around when it comes to making the future better and brighter.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A lot of people work for themselves or start a business because they want to escape the 9 to 5. That’s initially what I thought I was doing while maintaining my #1 goal, which is working alongside people that I share values with. But at some point, I realized I didn’t want to just freelance, but I wanted to build a team—both because it truly makes your work better since you have varying perspectives and a lot more talent going into that work, but also because you can have a bigger impact in the world that way. But it’s a big decision to go from being a freelancer to having a full-fledged company and ultimately, it means less time. I definitely work more than I would in a 9 to 5, and I’ve hit moments of burnout. I don’t subscribe to the unsustainable “hustle culture” though and want to challenge the capitalistic ideas around work culture, especially here in the United States. I’m currently taking a course called “Time Genius” that’s about completely shifting your relationship to time, which has taught me that “you have to put in time to make time.” That’s what I’m doing now, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to continually move closer to getting more time while still making the same level of impact I want to make, especially now that I’m a mom too.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fat Moon Creative?
Fat Moon Creative is a boutique, LA-based digital marketing agency for purpose-driven brands, organizations, and changemakers. We love working with people who have bold ideas and the grit and courage to see them through. To help those ideas take off and thrive, we offer branding and digital marketing services, including social media marketing (which includes organic and paid social, as well as influencer and creator partnerships).

Social media is a beast and knowing what platforms to be on, what to post, and how to make heads or tails of those posts in terms of success can be really tough for businesses and thought leaders because of how time-intensive the nature of the work is and the way the algorithms change on the daily. So we’re here to help people navigate social media and get their messages, products, and services out in front of their target audiences in a way that is going to truly resonate so that they can focus on what they actually love doing.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was (still am!) a bookworm, soaking up everything from Bermuda Triangle lore to Japanese fairy tales with a flashlight under the covers after bedtime. Like many seventh graders, I thought I was going to be a marine biologist and essentially wanted to be a real-life Indiana Jones.
