Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Cho.
Hi Caroline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“Just an ordinary person living an ordinary life.”
Such was my view growing up. And like so many, I left my home for the exciting frontier that is America with hope and optimism.
Upon putting down roots in Los Angeles, I became homesick. And in a sheer twist of serendipity, I found inspiration in building a “home away from home.”
A sanctuary where anyone could eat, drink, and laugh; where they could find respite from a fast-paced world or make a new friend and share their own life experiences over soju alike.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
1. During the early years, overcoming language barriers as an immigrant to America was the key challenge.
2. Maintaining the unique identity of an analog business in the digital age
3. Navigating the great pandemic of 2020
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dan Sung Sa?
Japan has the izakaya. Britain has the gastro pub. In Korea, the savvy diner looking for great food and a great time heads to the pojangmacha. Pojangmacha serves Koreans as both restaurant and pub, serving tapas (Anju) with authentic Korean spirit beverages such as soju and makgulli.
One need not fly across the Pacific Ocean to enjoy the dining and entertainment experience that is pojangmacha. Since 1997, Dan Sung Sa has welcomed Southern Californians to join in the pojangmacha experience. Located in the Koreatown district of Los Angeles, Dan Sung Sa has become a “must-go” destination for visitors hungry for authentic, delicious Korean anju and dishes.
Profiled and lauded in numerous lifestyle and dining publications, Dan Sung Sa delivers the best of the pojangmacha experience to American shores. Named after Korea’s very first cinema house, Dan Sung Sa’s interior décor evokes its namesake – featuring period posters highlighting Korean film works, both classic and modern. Step inside Dan Sung Sa’s doors, and you are inside a genuine pojangmacha, just as Koreans know them in their homeland.
