Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Gaerlan Starr.
Hi Carolina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in the Philippines, I migrated to the US in 2016. This gave me a fresh start but also new challenges, particularly in building my career. I was a teacher/preschool owner in the Philippines and hold a master’s degree in education. I wanted a career and that was in line with my qualifications, and at the same time, learn something new. That’s when I discovered Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or the science of how people learn and behave. I enrolled in the National University post-graduate certificate program in ABA and started working as a behavior therapist with the goal of becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The job was by no means easy. I work with individuals with autism spectrum disorder who exhibit behavior problems like aggression, self-injury, excessive tantrums, and others. I loved the challenge though.
In 2019, I became eligible to sit for the board exam to become a behavior analyst. I was thrilled to pass on my first try because I really worked hard for it! My passion for the field is in full bloom. I worked at ABA agencies to train behavior therapists and supervise intervention programs for children and adults on the spectrum. I work with individuals and families in reducing maladaptive behaviors and teaching them skills that will improve their quality of life.
In order to prioritize my health and prevent burnout, I studied health coaching and yoga teacher training at YogaMedCo. Today, I combine the principles of ABA with mindfulness, yoga, and health coaching. Recently, I opened an ABA agency called Behavior Motivation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely obstacles along the way. Having grown up in the Philippines and then moving to a new country was a complete turnaround. I had to adjust to my new environment and become more independent. I had to adapt to the culture while staying true to my roots. Thankfully, LA is a melting pot, and there are other people that can relate to my situation.
Other challenges were finances and cultural differences in the workplace. Establishing a work-life balance is also an ongoing process. I need to give myself reminders to prioritize self-care.
The most difficult part was missing my family and friends. Even now, I am still rebuilding my circle and support system.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We provide mindfulness-based behavior therapy for children with autism, which is a unique approach in ABA. We use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to develop present-moment awareness, values, and psychological flexibility. We prioritize teaching coping skills and socio-emotional learning, as well as, avoid aversive or coercive methods of intervention. Our goal is to make behavior therapy a fun and positive experience.
We also offer parent/caregiver training to give them the tools to help their loved ones. We empower parents to implement the techniques our therapy team uses.
ABA services for children may be funded by Medi-Cal, Regional Centers or private medical insurance.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am definitely a risk taker! Moving to the US, pursuing a new career, buying a new house and starting my own business are just some of the risks that I have taken. They are however, well calculated, so I think I am reaping the benefits.
I’ve learned to weigh pros and cons because I’ve made business investments that have failed in the past. The key is to move on and not give up. There’s always lessons in failures. I have learned to ask for help, and nurture relationships with people that encourage me. I am grateful to have supportive family and friends!
I love the excitement of going into new ventures and not knowing what’s to come! There’s a quote that says, “The real risk is doing nothing.”
