Inspiring Conversations with Asia Zdziarska of archemy.LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Zdziarska

Hi Asia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into architecture and construction has been unconventional and has taken me across many continents – I’ve lived in Europe, Africa, Australia, and now the US. After earning my first degree, I took on the full-time role of being a mum to my three young children. During that time my passion for architecture never wavered. When the timing felt right, I applied to the Masters program in architecture at UCLA, and was accepted. I haven’t looked back since!
I’m now the proud founder of archemy.LA, a one-stop design and build firm with a mission to deliver beautifully crafted spaces. As a licensed architect and general contractor, I handle the entire project from start to finish. I work closely with my clients from the initial design concept, through the final build and turnkey delivery. My goal is to create spaces that are not only beautiful, functional, and efficient but also reflect each client’s unique personality.
Being a woman in a predominantly male industry hasn’t always been easy, but it’s given me unique strengths. I’ve developed a strong sense of resilience, allowing me to navigate challenges with determination and grace. It’s also sharpened my attention to detail, ensuring that no aspect of a project is overlooked. Above all, it has fuelled my creativity, pushing me to bring fresh, innovative ideas to my projects. The most fulfilling part of my work is creating spaces that are both practical and beautiful. I turn houses into homes that FEEL perfect for my clients the moment they walk through the door.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced many challenges as I embarked on my journey later in life, especially in a male-dominated industry. Returning to school and diving into architecture while being a full-time parent was challenging. Juggling coursework, and the demands of motherhood often left me feeling stretched thin, but my passion kept me pushing through those tough moments.
Entering a field dominated by men, I often felt the pressure to prove myself, especially as someone starting my career later in life. I worked twice as hard to earn respect and be seen as an equal, constantly challenging outdated industry norms and perceptions.
Without a traditional path or established network in the industry, I had to carve my own way. Finding my path meant overcoming self-doubt and navigating unfamiliar challenges.
Each hurdle shaped my journey, fueling my determination and helped me build a unique approach that sets me apart.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a proudly female-owned and architect-led design and build practice based in Manhattan Beach, California that embraces diversity. Our firm’s mission is to integrate thoughtful architecture with flawless construction. We focus primarily on residential projects and offer a full range of architectural, interior design and construction services. Including new construction, additions and remodels.

Unable to draw a clear line between where architecture ends and construction begins inspired me to start a practice that combines both. We value efficiency and project management very highly and work directly with our clients and subcontractors to create a seamless experience and design driven, carefully built spaces that focus on the specific needs of their inhabitants.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor and building a network can feel daunting initially, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. I appreciate input from people whom I admire and look up to, their direction is invaluable. My advice is to be proactive and put yourself out there, even when it feels uncomfortable. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to people whose work you admire.
One approach that worked well for me was directly reaching out to architects and designers I admired. I’d send a brief, sincere message expressing my admiration for their work and asking if they’d be open to a quick chat. Most people are surprisingly generous with their time if they see genuine interest.
Also, look beyond formal mentorship. Some of my most valuable advice has come from casual conversations with peers and clients. Show up, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. People love to form genuine relationships and share their experiences if you approach them with authenticity and respect.
