Inspiring Conversations with Andy Sinclair of Sinclair Watches

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Sinclair.

Hi Andy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up I was always into art, whether it was drawing comics, painting graffiti or building custom cars, I was always creating something. As the son of a great mechanic, I remember being amazed at how lowriders and showcars were so personalized and so unique. It made me really appreciate the craft of customizing, of turning something ordinary into a representation of you and your ideas.
That concept for me has transformed into working with clients on custom art projects spanning from hand-painted Air Jordan’s to comic book themed watches.
Starting as a side hustle, Sinclair Watches has now evolved into a unique workshop where clients can order a custom watch designed just for them, and that watch will then be hand-built right here in Los Angeles. L.A. is home, and it’s artistic culture has been such an inspiration, so I’m very proud to build our custom watches in Los Angeles.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While I understood the artistic aspects of customizing, I had absolutely no background in watch engineering, so it was a steep learning curve taking apart that first watch. Diving down rabbit holes, watching online videos and chatting with veteran watchmakers, I began to build up the set of skills I needed. With practice, trial and a lot of error, I found myself becoming confident in the tasks that I once doubted.

We’ve been impressed with Sinclair Watches, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sinclair Watches is a Custom Watch Workshop, creating limited edition watches and 1 of 1 custom timepieces. Our watches are proudly designed and hand-built in Los Angeles. We collaborate with our clients to create unique watches that reflect their taste and lifestyle. With an artistic background including comics, graffiti, fine art and custom showcars, inspiration can spark from unlikely sources, resulting in some unique expressions of watch design. Some of our projects have used unorthodox materials in their designs, like a special watch that incorporated 15 real flower petals into the dial. Working closely with our clients, every watch is individually built and personalized in our Los Angeles workshop.
We also get a chance to work on some fun watch builds supporting great causes, like the “Gamble Golf 1” watch that we designed to be auctioned off at the Kyle Gamble Memorial Golf Tournament, supporting mental health.
