Inspiring Conversations with Amy Pigliacampo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Pigliacampo.

Amy Pigliacampo

Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thank you so much for having me!

My background and education are rooted in fashion; I worked for several major brands and advertising agencies, ran a handbag company in NYC for five years, and was a wardrobe stylist for seven years before pivoting into interior design. I had gotten to a point in my career where I wanted to create something that was more lasting and right about that time, a photographer that I worked with asked if she could shoot my house in Silverlake for Apartment Therapy. That was the beginning of the journey and when I started to explore home design and remodeling. I started doing small projects for friends and family, then took the plunge; I rehabbed a shabby foreclosure with my husband, which led to new projects in Brooklyn, NY, Woodstock, NY, Austin TX, and Durango, Denver, Breckenridge, and Boulder, CO. During the five years that I lived in Colorado, my heart was still firmly rooted in Topanga Canyon. After two years of debate, travel, and soul searching, my family and I found a very special home and moved back to the Canyon in June. I call it the LA loophole; we can pretend we live in a quaint small town while having easy access to a massive metropolis.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The day-to-day of my career feels jagged but the overall trajectory is steep. I have learned some of the harder lessons on my personal projects which have enabled me to be a much stronger advocate and guide for my clients. I think the most challenging part is staying very open to possibilities and not holding on too tightly to ideas and expectations. Renovating is an exercise in creativity, letting go, and patience, that last one being the hardest for me. These projects take a lot of time and sometimes it can be really hard to wait; oftentimes we cannot share what we are doing for years! When something is finally photographed, I feel so much relief but it takes a while to get there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are an interior design studio that specializes in residential renovations, select new builds, and intimate commercial projects. Many people don’t fully understand what we do so I’m happy to explain; we see things that other people cannot see and guide our clients toward that vision. We peel back layers of not-so-great decisions and bring spaces into modern times without destroying their soul.

While we do take on very special new builds, we really get excited about renovations. The uglier, the better. Our superpower is our ability to make the least amount of changes that result in very dramatic transformations. A well-designed space is truly life-changing and we want our clients to experience that for themselves.

We approach projects as if they were our own; clients trust us to invest their money wisely and that’s something we take very seriously. We love all the pretty parts of design, the furnishings, and materials but ultimately we are hired to guide our clients through a very emotional and lengthy process that often includes hard financial decisions.

Education is a huge part of our job; many clients have never been through a renovation before and we help them break down their goals and prioritize based on their dreams and constraints. It’s our job to create design solutions that change the way our clients experience their homes while being an advocate for them to ensure that their investment is sound.

What’s next?
The biggest change is being back in LA! While I’m not from here (not even close, grew up on the East Coast) I feel like I am finally home. My future plans involve developing and designing products; tiles, rugs, hardware, and furniture. These things take time, and I can’t share specifics yet, but I promise to do so as soon as possible.
