Inspiring Conversations with Alison Palevsky of Palevsky Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Palevsky.

Alison Palevsky

Hi Alison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In my early twenties, I started working under two talented interior designers and learned a great deal in the field while going to school for design simultaneously. A few years later, I started my own interior firm, SPI Design, with a partner. We split our time working on projects in New York and Los Angeles for the better part of a decade. In 2014, I founded my current company, Palevsky Co, specializing in interiors that blend comfort, livability, and modernity with high style.

I have long worked alongside established and emerging artists to create collaborative products and artworks, many of which were sold in my studio/retail location (now closed). The studio also housed rotating exhibitions that she personally curated, many driven by a singular theme. She continues to consult with clients on their personal art collections and help them locate specific works from around the globe.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing about starting or owning a business is without bumps, curves, and detours, but I believe you end up where you’re supposed to be. Along the way, I had two children, which changed the way I managed my time and improved my organizational and multi-tasking skills. In 2016, I opened a retail space in West LA which required an entirely different set of skills. Learning to navigate the needs of a customer who doesn’t have an existing design vocabulary was a challenge. I realized that operating a showroom or store was a major pivot from working with an individual client. At the time, the area I opened the store in was just not ready for a high-concept design store, and I closed it just three years from opening. It was a big disappointment, but it allowed me more time to develop my interior business which is now thriving.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are small, but we are mighty in creativity interior firm that specializes in high-end residential projects. A client that chooses to work with us knows that they will get personal attention and also understands that the details are everything. Our team has worked on projects all over great Los Angeles but also in New York, Miami, Colorado, Montecito, and Mexico. We take great pride in our repeat relationships with almost all of our clients. Our mission is to bring a defined vision to a project and help curate the space to reflect both our design aesthetic and the client’s life. The versatility and range of our work make us stand out – we have had hands-on everything from a Tudor to a mid-century modern to a ground-up contemporary, and there is an elegance and modernity to each one that we add. We allow the architecture and the client’s personal journey to guide us, and as a result, they all look incredibly unique and refined.

How do you define success?
I have a tendency to look far into the future, and I have to remind myself to stay focused on the present. I feel successful when I am moving toward a set of smaller goals; stagnation makes me crazy. I set monthly and yearly goals for myself and like to track my progress. Of course, it’s always rewarding when I finish a project or installation, and everyone is thrilled with the result. That feels like success, and I try to savor those moments!
