Inspiring Conversations with Sau Cheng of Woofpak Pet Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sau Cheng.

Hi Sau, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started Woofpak in a tiny kitchen, with a mixer, a stove, with a fluffy pup named Nikko with the belief that dogs deserve better. Better food cooked with fresh, simple all-natural ingredients and inspired by our favorite recipes. This is when Woofpak Pet Kitchen was born. In October 2019, we opened our first location that was merely 200 sq feet. We cooked our signature meal toppers on-site and many times, they have been mistaken for people’s food. There are now six recipes that are also complete & balanced diets for dogs. Thanksgiving Feast – A gourmet dish with Herb turkey, cranberries, pumpkin, and veggies. Shepherd’s Pie – A traditional dish with beef, veggies, and potatoes. Poke Bowl – Seared salmon, served with spinach and sweet potatoes over brown rice. California Bowl – Baja-styled turkey and potato with veggies and cheddar cheese. Chicken Carbonara – A rustic dish with Italian Herb Chicken, Orzo, Veggies, and Feta Cheese. Hawaiian BBQ – A tropical dish with roasted pork, cherries, veggies, and elbow macaroni. In October 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, we launched our second store at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine, CA. Our 1200 sq ft store includes a doggy bakery and other unique food/treats and wellness products that are also made with wholesome, natural ingredients. We now even have a bully stick chew bar that we import directly from Argentina. Just last month, we opened our third location (March 2021) in Newport Beach, CA at Fashion Island. This store will be 2500 sq ft.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have been fortunate with finding the right people to join our team. However, our business has grown so much so we are always looking for new talent! It’s been challenging with COVID so hopefully things will get better as more vaccines are being administered.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Woofpak Pet Kitchen?
Imagine William Sonoma and Whole Foods put together for pets! We decorate our space with amazing smells, beautiful visuals like silk lanterns, cherry blossom trees, photo-op, and trays of delicious wholesome treat samples for dogs. It’s magical, inviting, and memorable like Disneyland and it really allows our staff to interact with our customers and their dogs. Since COVID hit, people really needed an outlet. Our environment is so pleasing to the eye and our staff is super friendly and knowledgeable that customers always feel at ease when they shop at Woofpak. We really become part of the community with our presence and our regulars come in at least once a week! It’s like a grocery trip for them and their pup! And we always have treats! We don’t carry hundreds of SKUs so it’s never overwhelming at our store. It’s always very inviting, relaxing and interactive with our staff. That’s really important because people need to see things in a different light. Too much science gives them a headache and too little knowledge provides no confidence. So it’s a balanced act. We are definitely not your average pet store! Anyone that walks into our space would never know it was for pets! We also have a doggy bakery inside our store so it always smells like baked cookies. We bake daily our doggy donuts, cookies and birthday cakes and it looks too beautiful to eat – completely human-grade too!
