Inspiring Conversations with Robert Wagner of Wagner Charters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Wagner.

Wagner Charters family business began when Bob Wagner moved his family to the beautiful Huntington Beach, CA back in 1982. Bob loved the pacific ocean and took his son, Robert Wagner on the water any chance he got. Robert Wagner grew up learning from his father all the ins and out of catching fish by reading the ocean for the best locations. Their passion for fishing flourished an idea of teaching others how to catch great fish however, at the time both Bob and Robert were employed full time. In 2008, they started doing fishing charters on the weekends, to their surprise they were booked every single weekend each month. Their name and business caught the attention of the locals of Huntington Beach and before they knew it, it was time to expand. Both Bob and Robert decided to take this father and son family business to the next level. Bob Wagner retired from an electrical engineering job and Robert Wagner quit his job with Verizon to pursue his personal dream of operating a full-time family business. Their vision developed over the love for community, creating teachable moments and memories that are cherished for a lifetime. The business took off and they were more than ready for the next big thing.

In 2015, Bob and Robert decided to add more features to their services such as snorkeling in the gorgeous deep sea, Catalina Shuttles and scenic tours of the historic coastline which includes stops at the Queen Mary, USS IOWA, and Angels Gate Lighthouse. In 2019 Wagner Charters were honored to be recognized as one of the top activities in “things to do” in Huntington Beach which led them to become number one Catalina Shuttle service as well as number one Fishing Charter. Bob and Robert would have never guessed that in doing what they love and taking the big leap of faith they would be where they are today. Father and son continue to explore the pacific ocean side by side along with the community they have grown to love. They take pride in being a huge part of their clients’ lives and memories and strive to give back as much, if not more than they received. So next time you’re looking for an adventure in Orange County, Wagner Charters will bring you aboard, you won’t be disappointed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t always easy for Wagner Charters to get to where they are today. As with any small business, let alone a small family-owned and operated business, they have faced a fair share of struggles. Bob and Robert have faced many conflicts with the city to get the proper permit to operate their business. Robert Wagner appeared before the city council to obtain an in harbor commercial permit which would allow them to run harbor tours. After countless meetings with the city and the perseverance of Bob and Robert Wagner, they were granted just that. Unfortunately, the challenges didn’t stop there. In March, due to Covid-19 shutdown, they lost nearly 50 charters resulting in the temporary closure of Wagner Charters.

During these trying times, Robert Wagner wasn’t going to stay complacent. He sought after local businesses in hopes of collaboration opportunities and wanted to find a way to give back to the community that has shown him enormous support. One of his primary goals was to draw attention to the local mom and pops and that’s when he came to Four Sons Brewing and Johnny’s Saloon Pizzeria and together they created a special beer. They called it “TriUnity” to represent the unity within his beloved community. A portion of the proceeds from this beer went to a few local businesses who have faced similar challenges from the shutdown. It was no surprise that the community of Huntington Beach showed up in a huge way and supported generously. It became very clear to Bob and Robert that the community was their foundation and with them along their side, Wagner Charters will persevere.
