Inspiring Conversations with John Coggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Coggins.

Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2014 right to La Cienega and Fairfax. I moved from my large studio space in Tulsa, where I had built out a live room, vocal booth and legit control room back to working from home in an apartment in LA. My first week I met with one of the only people I knew who was living in LA at the time, Whitney Fenimore, we got coffee at coffee commissary in Weho and just reconnected. Coffee Comm would become my obsession Over the next five years. Nothing beats an iced Cubano. Whitney and I ended up playing some shows together at Hotel Cafe where I made one of my longest-standing connections. I hustled, met people, and before I knew it I was producing artists, playing a couple of shows here and there and within two years moved into a massive studio in Burbank with my homeboys of “Rock Salt Music” and made magic. In 2018 I signed a pub deal and got heavily into the tv and sync world. I now have thousands of placements, featured on over 250 different TV shows and a handful of movies. I’m a worker. I’ve always worked hard and finished my goals in life. Success is a result of hard work and consistency. I now have my own studio in Westlake Village and my wife and I bought a house this year in Thousand Oaks where we’re raising our two angel daughters Ella and Emersyn!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is completely smooth. There’s always gonna be some bumps along the way. But it’s about how we choose to respond to setbacks that define us. I think there were bumps in each chapter of my career. Chapter one, moving to LA and trying to get into the music industry is a massive hurdle to clear. Staying motivated to keep going when working from home was always a challenge. Chapter 2, moving into a studio space in Burbank with Rock Salt Music and singing a deal was a dream but came with its challenges of navigating work and people while still wanting to do more, refine my craft. Chapter 3, signing my pub deal was FULL of bumps in the road. I had ended my deal with RS and was relying on this pub deal to come through and it ended up stalling for eight months. Meanwhile, my wife was about to have our first baby and we were living off our savings account. Little stressful. When the deal came, it by no means solved all my problems. I had to scratch and claw to get what I was owed. Now, all that hard work is paying off. It was not easy. This latest chapter is balancing family and work. Dealing with feelings of guilt in leaving the house everyday while my amazing wife Taylor, who put her teaching career on hold, takes on the massive challenge of caring for our babies. Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a songwriter-producer. I always try to make whatever I’m working on stand out in the crowd. From the writing to the production to the mix. I take pride in it all and have the track record to prove that something I’m doing is working!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned that I’m super lucky to do something that is all over the Internet and can still be fully accomplished even during a pandemic! So grateful
