Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Do you know what it feels like to lose your mind? Our clients at the Amos Institute literally know what it feels like. And even more remarkable, they know what it feels like to get it back. That’s why I founded the Amos Institute – to help people with cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. My story starts in a bar in London. I was bartending in a restaurant in Knightsbridge during a year abroad that turned into several years living and working in London.
I heard the best stories behind the bar. I was finishing up my undergrad degree in theatre – or as my best friend and I joke, we got our degrees in storytelling. As I poured pints and stirred cocktails, I was learning outside of the classroom that we are all writing and telling our own stories, as patron after patron divulged their regrets, dreams, and fears to a kindly stranger holding a bar towel.
Fast forward several years and I had followed a job to Las Vegas. I was managing a 24-hour restaurant and the stories I heard while working graveyard shifts broke my heart. A theme was emerging. So many people are affected by chronic disease. So many people’s stories were stained with loss following the diagnosis and battle with chronic illness. Meanwhile, my own grandmother had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for over a decade. I was watching as it devastated my family. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution. I took the leap and embarked on a total career change. Eventually, I started graduate school at USC and received a Master of Science in Nutrition, Healthspan, and Longevity. I then completed advanced training and received a post-graduate certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine. This education primed me to look into the root cause of chronic illness.
While completing my training, I founded the Amos Institute: an organization specializing in helping individuals prevent and reverse cognitive decline utilizing a functional medicine approach known as the Bredesen Protocol. That’s where I am now. People on our Cognitive Health Program at the Amos Institute work every day to optimize their cognitive health. We’ve been unbelievably fortunate to see some amazing results and we are always working to make our program more robust. I’m also currently working toward my PhD so that the Amos Institute can soon take a greater role into contributing to research in this area of science and health.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is any entrepreneur’s road smooth? I faced adversity along the way, just as I predict everyone who dares to do something different does. I remember while taking a very introductory nutrition pre-requisite course, the professor asked the students what they wanted to do when they graduated. I said I wanted to start a practice. The professor scoffed and rolling her eyes, said “Oh please, you’re never going to be Kim Kardashian’s dietitian. You’re not special” I was nonplussed. Maybe because we were in LA, it was assumed that I wanted to be the ‘dietitian to the stars’? What’s funny is that every client we work with is a star. Every single person is the big VIP for their family. Everyone is the protagonist of their own story and in the stories and lives of the people who love them most. And at the Amos Institute, we keep that top of mind.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Amos Institute specializes in helping people achieve their very best brain health. On our Cognitive Health Program, clients utilize targeted nutrition and lifestyle interventions to intervene at the root causes of cognitive decline as a means of preventing and reversing Alzheimer’s disease. Our therapeutics are evidence-based and our results have been published in the scientific literature. As a business owner, clinician, and human being, nothing makes me happier and prouder than when a client who has been suffering from cognitive decline improves. It is awe inspiring and remarkably humbling. We have had clients who have had their driver’s licenses revoked as a result of their cognitive deficits who after working with us have had their license reinstated because they are able to pass the cognitive tests. People are so fearful of dementia, and for good reason.
Think of all the beautiful stories that make up our lives – can you imagine what it must feel like to forget them all? Can you imagine the loss of self? I am forever proud to say that I play a small part in helping people hold onto those stories. The other thing that you should know about the Amos Institute is that we provide truly exceptional customer service. We care about each of our clients so much, and that comes through in the way we interact with all who contact us. We have also worked exceptionally hard to provide a product that is affordable. Unfortunately, functional medicine falls outside the realm of typical insurance coverage and is therefore, inaccessible to so many. At the Amos Institute, our goal is to provide this lifesaving information to all who want and need it, so making our program the most affordable of its kind was of utmost importance to us.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We have information that can literally change lives. The problem is, nobody knows about it. In general, functional medicine – looking for the root cause of disease – is still not mainstream. People can support us by spreading the word that each of us are in control of our health destiny. Each of us have the ability to live a life without dementia and without Alzheimer’s and we have the ability to hold onto our stories and all the memories that make us “us”. We need to spread the word that Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented and even reversed. Even if cognitive decline is not a current concern for you personally, spread the word for your parents or grandparents. We need to let people know that there is new science out there.
And all of the science points towards the fact that it is our diet and lifestyle that promotes disease. Unfortunately, our “healthcare” system is actually a “disease-care” system. It is centered around waiting for us to get sick and then trying to manage our symptoms. Hopefully, through our work at the Amos Institute and through like-minded organizations, we will be able to adjust the system so that we actually promote health and don’t get sick in the first place. People can find out more about our Cognitive Health Program and contact us directly through our website. We would love to hear from you.
