Today we’d like to introduce you to Wei-jen Liao
Hi WEI-JEN, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began as a recovered codependent, propelled by a profound spiritual awakening and a strong support system. This transformation inspired me to start my own business as a life coach, where I help individuals navigate their relationships, especially during challenging times, and strengthen their relationships with themselves.
Drawing from my personal experiences, including growing up in an alcoholic family, I share wisdom and strength to guide others on their unique paths. Additionally, I mentor young artists in the Bay Area, helping them break into the art and entertainment industry. My mission is to empower others to find their solutions and thrive in their personal and professional lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest challenges is changing our beliefs, identity, feelings, and behavior. Our belief systems and subconscious patterns are ingrained in us from a very young age, particularly from the ages of 6 to 11, when we begin to mimic and adopt behaviors from our role models, whether healthy or unhealthy.
Our thoughts create certain feelings, which lead to specific decisions and actions, forming a mode of behavior that becomes almost genetic in its persistence. However, unlike our genes, these patterns can be changed. The true challenge lies in living consciously rather than subconsciously. By the time we reach adulthood, especially after age 35, our patterns are pretty much set in stone. But does that mean our subconscious and conscious minds can never be reprogrammed or rewired from our familiar autopilot belief system? That’s not necessarily true. To change or redevelop new, healthier belief systems, experiences, feelings, and thoughts, practices like meditation and mindfulness are essential. Additionally, self-hypnosis is another powerful strategy for making conscious and long-term changes.
Living with consciousness involves actively questioning and altering these deep-seated patterns, much like driving a car without thinking about each action if we’ve been doing it for years. Shifting from this automatic mode to a more mindful approach is one of the significant challenges I see in many cases of people in their personal transformation.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
One thing that sets me apart from others is my unique journey. Originally from Taipei, Taiwan, I moved to the United States at 20 years old, starting from scratch with no English skills, background, or family in the States. Over time, I have gained a rich international cultural background, encompassing Western and Asian cultures. Today, I speak English fluently, almost at a native level. This diverse cultural perspective is a crucial skill that distinguishes me in my field.
As a life coach, I leverage my international experiences to help clients from various cultural backgrounds, whether from Asian or Western cultures. I understand the unique challenges they face, whether as individuals, immigrants, or those from dysfunctional families. I have walked a similar path as an immigrant, a wife, an artist, a young woman living alone in the U.S., and an international student striving to build a life here.
In addition to my personal experiences, I have invested extensively in relationship and transformation workshops. This, combined with my language skills and cultural interpretive abilities, allows me to offer tailored guidance to my clients. I’m proud of my impact, helping people navigate their relationships, overcome personal challenges, and achieve their goals.
My ability to relate to a wide range of experiences and provide culturally sensitive coaching that resonates with clients from diverse backgrounds sets me apart. This holistic approach, grounded in both professional training and personal experience, is what I specialize in and am known for.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Besides being a life and relationship coach, I also teach Chinese Mandarin. Most of my students are adults, and I offer online one-on-one private lessons. Many of them learn Mandarin for professional reasons or because their spouse or partner speaks the language.
You might think that life coaching and language teaching are two separate fields, but I see them as interconnected. Consider this: without a voice or language skills, regardless of what kind of language, it’s challenging to express our issues, feelings, needs, and desires as adults. Language may seem like a technical skill, but it’s much more. When we learn to leverage our language skills effectively, we gain the freedom to express ourselves fully and navigate our relationships more easily.
Having a voice is crucial, and knowing how to use language to express that voice properly is even more important. It’s not just about career advancement or improved communication; it’s about aligning our purpose, message, and spirit. By helping people find and use their voice through language learning, I enable them to connect more deeply with themselves and others, enhancing their personal and professional lives.
