Today we’d like to introduce you to Timmy Ajulo.
Hi Timmy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Oluwatimilehin Ajulo, but everyone calls me Timmy. I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and I began designing and making clothes when I was seven years old. In 2011, I moved to the United States, and my life has never been the same. I’ve been designing full-time for eight years now, making custom patterns for clients. I’m currently working on an e-commerce platform to sell my designs on a mass scale.
When I started Timmy Ajulo, I used my career in-home health aid to fund my business earlier. Also, I researched and built relationships with organizations that helped me attract my first few clients. The community and my loyal clients have sustained us throughout the years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I find it challenging to balance business and design at times. It’s something that I’m still learning along the way. At first, I did everything by myself. I was the designer, marketing team, CEO, and more. It was too much, and I almost found myself giving up. I lost customers and friends, and my social life barely existed. But I don’t regret anything. Everything in life happens for a reason. I now have a great team, and the business is growing. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s happening this fast.
As you know, we’re big fans of Timmy Ajulo. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Each Timmy Ajulo piece is handcrafted in our private showroom. We pour time and effort into every creation, integrating elements that speak to our client’s personality. We source only the finest fabrics, including cashmere, silk, merino wool, etc. The brand is known for custom designs and specialty tunics worn by some of the world’s top celebrities and influencers.
Inspired by his traveling experience across the World, Timmy Ajulo wants to encourage people to support socially responsible artisans from the continent and across its diaspora.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, Covid-19 taught me how to stay resourceful and ready. We relied on international suppliers for some of our fabrics and finishes, and not having access to major hubs like China impacted our work. We are currently looking for alternative options internationally and building relationships with U.S manufacturers.
