Today we’d like to introduce you to Siyi Chen.
Hi Siyi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a media composer and guzheng performer based in New York City.
I was a journalism major previously; I grew up in a musical family but never pursued music as a career. My adventure into music didn’t truly begin until I moved to New York City four years ago.
I’ve spent a lot of time practicing the guzheng and the piano, therefore I often include utilize my features into my works. I also take pleasure in investigating connections between seemingly unrelated fields, such as music and society, composition and technology, and the senses of sight and sound.
My business partner and I started our si scoring studio about a year and a half ago to compose music for the media. Our work has been nominated for or won several international prizes. New Shidaiqu, a Chinese jazz album, is presently under production.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road wasn’t very smooth, but I was fortunate to have the help of many people.
To gain work, I had to rely on cold emails and direct messages to directors and producers. Some customers wouldn’t value the time and effort put in by artists. This is common in many industries, but I see it as an opportunity to improve myself.
I think I’m finally getting to a place where I can find my groove, and I’m very grateful to the people who have helped me along the way!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Si Scoring Studio?
Yusi and I co-founded our company Si Scoring Studio in 2021… We composed for films, games, commercials and new media projects.
Our studio excels in writing experimental, abstract music as well as creating the soundtracks for more narrative-based productions. Our areas of expertise: jazz, classical, experimental, and ethnic.
We have previously discovered the possibility of fusing traditional Chinese music with Western music, and now we’re trying to use the tools at our disposal to present a new and exciting form of content by incorporating cutting-edge audio production methods and innovative visual representations of musical compositions.
Over the time working together, musicians in our studio have developed a deep mutual understanding with each other. That allowed us to work together and make music for different types of projects. The projects we scored have won several international film awards. Such as The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and Los Angeles Film Awards.
We offer services to score for visual projects.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success means something different to everyone. In my book, success is being able to do what I love, taking each job and customer seriously, and devoting the rest of my life to expanding my musical horizons.
