Today we’d like to introduce you to Sha’Ron Taft.
Sha’Ron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, I’ve had a passion for “hair” for as long as I can remember. Two of my aunts had a beauty salon in Long Beach for many years and I spent a lot of time there as a child, asking questions, observing and begging to help. Lol! I started braiding hair at the tender age of nine! My mother kept me in braids. So, when it was time to take the braids out, I would take the old hair from my braids and use it to braid my dolls hair.
From there, I braided my cousin’s hair and that birthed “Sha’Ron the Braider.” I took a break from braiding for a decade. But, I NEVER lost the passion for hair. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Human Services and worked in the Medical Field for 16 years. I was trying to find a career path that was stable and lucrative but honestly, I was just going through the motions. I never felt fulfilled. In 2016, I got pregnant with my last child and said to myself, ” There HAS TO BE more for me. I do not want to spend the rest of my career just working for a company and being unsatisfied.” At that moment, I made the decision to start back doing what I loved to do. So, I started back braiding hair! Immediately I noticed that the braiding hair brands were all lacking something. What one brand had, the others didn’t. Some brands didn’t dip well, some felt like plastic, some were too heavy and almost all of the hair caused my client’s scalps to itch and become irritated! THIS is what made me go into overdrive to produce an alternative to what was on the market and was going to be healthy for our hair.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! lol! It took me two and a half months of everyday grinding to even find a manufacturer! No one was even willing to hear my pitch in the beginning. It felt like if I didn’t already have a foot in the door of this industry than I was not getting in. I almost gave up actually. I stopped working on Precision Hair for over a month. But one day, I felt like God spoke to me and showed me that he gave me this vision and if the road was meant to be easy, he would have given it to everyone to travel! Manufactures were giving me all types of reasons why it was better to use their private label option instead of altering the product. They also were trying to deter me from making the hair “chemical free” due to cost. All of these doors slammed in my face just gave me the motivation to make it happen if even more. At that point, I kicked into to high gear and in nine months, Precision Hair Company was born!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Precision Hair Company’s mission is to provide an alternative to the toxic braiding hair that is widely distributed to us, with a chemical free, anti-itch braiding fiber. When I set out to make Precision Hair a brand, I knew that I wanted my brand to be the natural alternative to all of the other braiding hair brands on the market. So I designed my hair to be stripped of the bad toxins and made my edge glaze alcohol-free. The goal is to have quality products that are not harmful to the scalp. Secondly, I knew that I wanted my hair brand to be as close to natural hair as possible so, each stand is lightweight to give it a natural feel. Being a braider, I also realized the importance of my brand being pre-stretched so that it saved on time. These are the most important things that I wanted to roll into one and formulate the perfect braiding hair.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Well, I think I took one of the biggest risks ever when I stepped out on faith and left my job of 16years to dedicate myself to my brand. Lol! I mean, I was walking away from a secure salary, 401k and benefits for something that had no guarantee to make a $1! But I knew that my drive for this would lead me to success.
