Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Hernandez.
Hi Ron, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I currently run a growing firm that houses architecture, consulting, and construction for commercial and residential projects. Prime Studio Inc. has been immersed in residential projects since 2008 and in commercial projects since 2018. Although my company was not called Prime Studio Inc. in 2008, its inception began with a small commission.
Before ever having completed a formal project submittal to any city, I would make the claim to homeowners or general contractors that I worked on architectural projects. It was a bit of a white lie, but I was determined to see a job through, especially since someone would be entrusting me with a project that would affect their home. Eventually, a family would take a chance on me with the legalization of their unpermitted addition at the rear of their property. I pulled all of the resources at my disposal for the completion of that project. I copied the formatting of the drawings from my drafting class, I bugged my professors for advice, and I was at the City of La Mirada’s Building Department every 2 to 3 days to ask for informal corrections on whatever I had drafted up at the time. This was my way of diving head first into practicing the career that I had been waiting to start since the age of nine. Needless to say, I was able to complete my first of many projects to come!
Commitment to a project has always been crucial to begin a job. But the discipline to stick with a craft through the discomfort of the growing pains has callused my mental endurance to continue pushing for growth. I now understand that hitting goals in life can be hard yet not impossible. That understanding with a little bit of luck and a little bit of discipline is what has allowed me to have the practice that I have today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ego can be the enemy of progress. The challenge that I battled with is that life does its thing and does not have to conform to my whims. The only thing that is under my control is myself! What I have realized is that the trick is for me to stay as consistent as I can on a day-by-day basis to control my thought process. Problems are unavoidable, and circumstances surrounding me are for the most part out of my control. But the way I react towards those problems and circumstances is 100% under my charge. Therefore my never-ending obstacle is “Can I make myself react toward life in the way that facilitates the growth that I yearn for?”.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Prime Studio is immersed in both the world of design and construction each and every day. Practice after all is what refines the professional.
Although the company’s craft lies within design and construction, this organization specializes in people. What is meant by the term “people” refers not only to the client but the professionals with which Prime Studio collaborates (laborers, engineers, city employees, etc.). When it comes to a project, the ego is left at the door in order to allow the growth of a collaborative effort. This ethos is engrained within the DNA of the company’s identity.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
A mental trait that I stride to sear into my mindset is that of being relentless. A risk may impose harm on me in a variety of ways. If God blesses me with the gift of a new day, he has blessed me with the opportunity to heal and to learn from that harm. This process allows me to confront the fear of the risk as many times as I need to until I have surpassed the risk and have earned the gains that I worked for.
When I left the firm that employed me in order to grow my company full-time, I found comfort in knowing that Prime Studio would one day grow to become an exemplary part of my life’s legacy. After laughing at me for putting in my two weeks’ notice, my bosses warned me that if I left it will not be as easy to return when my company failed. That was 8 years ago this coming April. I took into account that I was already a father, the bills would not wait, and I would be starting from almost zero. But in my mind, I could not find a better person to bank on than myself. Self-belief is what always helps me see the risks in my life as puzzles that I will eventually solve.
