Hidden Gems: Meet Priscilla Aviña of 1918 Soluna Sisters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Aviña.

Hi Priscilla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for baking, crafting, and just about anything DIY. Over the years, baking has become my number one creative outlet and in many ways has been therapeutic for me. I began baking and working with chocolate as a hobby, but over the years, it has turned into a true passion of mine. I have been designated to create dessert tables for my family parties for many years. My family and friends have requested my assistance many times over the years to help with party planning and decor.

When the Covid pandemic hit, like many, I was reminded that life is too short. I promised myself to stop allowing the fear of starting a business to prevent me from taking a leap of faith. I have always had an immense amount of support from friends and family to start my own business, and that helped tremendously in my decision to finally move forward.

Not only did I decide to start a business in 2021, I decided I was going to take a huge leap and start two businesses. With the help of my younger sister, Michelle, we started 1918 Soluna Sisters Inc. I am the baker behind 1918 House of Sweets, and together, my sister and I, have Soluna Events which is our event planning and party rental business. These two businesses together make 1918 Soluna Sisters Inc.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t know anyone who has started a business that hasn’t had to navigate through a few bumps along the way. Starting a business was so new to me. It took hours of research to understand what was needed for each business and a lot of trials and errors along the way. There is so much that goes into running a small business that I don’t think people realize. We are required to be our own accountant, photographer, marketing director, manager, and so much more. The greatest challenge for me has been learning how to balance a full-time job, run both businesses, find time for my loved ones, as well as learning social media all over again. I had not been on any social media platforms for almost five years and so much has changed. I am slowly beginning to understand how social media works and how beneficial and necessary it is when owning and starting a business.

We’ve been impressed with 1918 Soluna Sisters Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
1918 Soluna Sisters Inc. includes my two businesses. My dessert baking business is named after the year my grandmother was born, 1918 House of Sweets. The event planning and party rental business I have with my sister is Soluna Events. Soluna refers to the sun (sol) and moon (luna) because my sister and I are like night and day, we are complete opposites.

What sets 1918 Soluna Sisters Inc. apart is that we offer more than one service for your event. We are a one-stop shop business that offers event planning, elegant bounce houses, photo backdrops, and desserts. The inventory we currently have and services we offer will expand further this year and in years to come.

We are very excited to grow and offer so much more for our clients in 2022!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Life is far too short to not chase after your dreams. TODAY is never too late to work hard towards something you love and feel passionate about.
