Hidden Gems: Meet Philip Ramos of PhilUpBartending

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Ramos.

Philip Ramos

Hi Philip, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Philip Ramos Jr. How PhilUpBartending started is actually kind of funny. I never wanted to bartend, nor did I ever think I would bartend in my whole life. I started at a Persian Grill on PCH in Newport, CA. Then, I was curious on how bartending would be if I did events such as weddings and other parties. So I went to a venue located in Riverside, CA and did that for a couple of months. Realizing how much money I could make doing it on my own, I slowly created PhilUpBartending with the help of my friends.

From there, it slowly took off by doing events for my friends, then word of mouth, and then eventually created an Instagram where more than half of my events get booked. I also use other platforms as well.

I’m currently handling most of my events, but I have two other bartenders who help out. Slowly growing but trying to take on as much of events as I can. two years in and currently still going, I enjoy bartending so much; I love meeting new people and having intense conversations while making cocktails. I feel like a therapist at times, but in all honesty, bartending is a career path that I truly enjoy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggle of a bartender is real. Let me tell you when there are 50 people in front of you and only one of me trying to make not one but multiple drinks at once while trying to make sure everyone’s drinks are made accordingly. But then again, I work well under pressure.

As you know, we’re big fans of PhilUpBartending. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m 100% in with PhilUpBartending.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, I fully clean my bar before and after each event while I’m setting up so they can see I keep everything clean. I have hand sanitizer out for everyone to use and I make sure I use gloves at each event.
