Hidden Gems: Meet Liz Law of Liz Get Fit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Law.

Hi Liz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was actually working in design when I realized my happy place was no longer sitting in a studio by myself. I felt most energized when I was being active, outside, and with other people.

With no real plan of how it was all going to work, I became certified in Group Fitness Instruction. While studying for this, I mentored under a fantastic husband and wife Personal Training/Group Fitness team, where I was able to help program and lead group fitness classes as well as shadow PT sessions. I gravitated toward personal training, where you can really provide individualized attention, and became certified in this arena as well.

While I was learning and leading group classes, I still was unsure of my career path. I had an acquaintance at the time (now friend and longest-running client!) tell me that if I ever needed a guinea pig, that she was my girl! I ran her through a group fitness style class at our local gym and she recorded much of it and put it on her Instagram. This led to her friend asking about doing partner sessions! I had my first clients and I felt like the luckiest person in the world.

My luck continued as my business quickly grew through word of mouth. I set up a gym in my backyard (thank you, Southern California weather), where we happened to have astroturf and first-floor windows that are reflective on the outside- perfect to use as mirrors to check your form when working out. All the stars were aligning.

I feel blessed that word of mouth brought me so much business. I must have been doing something right! I now offer private sessions, partner sessions, and small group classes in my outdoor home gym. My team and I have also been working very hard on a virtual strength training program, expected to soft launch Black Friday. My hope is to reach even more women that might not be able to see me in person due to time or geography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been lucky that my road has been somewhat smooth. My peer group was hungry for what I am offering, so it makes sense that I was able to develop such a wonderful clientele, to whom I am so grateful.

My biggest struggle has been trying to scale via the web. I love the hands-on, intimate nature of working with clients in person. I am comfortable in my gym, I have my niche, and everything is very natural and organic. As I write this, I am in the thick of finishing up my virtual program. The web is not my comfort space, though I am committed to maintaining my quality, ethos, and brand as I expand here. My team and I have worked hard to find the best platform and make it as user-friendly and effective as possible.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Liz Get Fit?
I strength train women (mostly mothers) in their mid30s-50s. Unfortunately, much of this population has been conditioned to believe that cardio and low-weight/high-rep workouts are the paths to their ideal body composition and health goals. My focus is on weight training, progressively adding more weight as you get stronger. I help women realize that they are stronger than they think!

Some of the women I train come to me having never weight-lifted before. I am able to offer a comfortable setting, skip the gym membership fees, and hopefully bypass any feelings of “gym intimidation.” My clients also have the option to train with a friend, making the sessions even more welcoming and affordable. My goal is to introduce weight training as a lifelong habit for people. It’s not a quick fix or a fad.

What I love about training this population is seeing the mental and emotional transformation that can take place. When mothers start to take control of their own health and see themselves as stronger in so many ways, they are able to make more positive health changes for their whole families, creating a huge ripple effect.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My greatest strength is probably also my toxic trait. When something captures my interest, I am able to really focus into it and drive toward it. Because of this, I’ve been able to keep going and keep building.
