Hidden Gems: Meet Leo Grifka of Short Stories Hotel – owned by Grifka Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Grifka.

Leo Grifka

Hi Leo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before starting Grifka Group, I held jobs as a bag boy, doors and mouldings delivery boy, and real estate broker. I knew I wanted to start my own real estate development company, but was searching for a project that I was truly passionate about, until I stumbled upon an opportunity in Culver City, an old, dilapidated, 49-room apartment motel. I loved the project and the location, envisioning it as a boutique hotel. Thus, I started Grifka Group with Palihotel Culver City as my first hotel project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When it comes to business, there are always road blocks. I’ve had many failures, setbacks, tough superiors, and sleepless nights before I even had the first opportunity to do what I really wanted, and only was it at that point that the real hard work began. The struggles typically came from people who said “no” when trying to dream big or do something novel. Also, developing and operating hotels is a very tough business. It is 24/7, and when most people finish their day or have off, the hotels are typically at their busiest. It is easy to let it run you down if you don’t love it.

We’ve been impressed with Short Stories Hotel – owned by Grifka Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Grifka Group is my umbrella company that encompasses hotels, hotel operations and a venture capital arm. I am very excited and particularly proud of the Short Stories Hotel brand with the first location being across the street from The Grove and CBS Studios on Fairfax. Short Stories Hotel is a space that celebrates design, service and the rich culture of the surrounding neighborhoods of West Hollywood and Fairfax. We wanted to create a place where every detail feels thoughtfully designed, and here at Short Stories, we offer exactly that, from the 66 guest rooms to our elevated lounge and bar, and the serene outdoor courtyard and pool. We embraced a ‘cultured California-contemporary’ aesthetic, blending classic European touches like terrazzo, stained woods, and brass with lush landscaping.

We’ve recently revamped the hotel’s F&B space and opened The Bar at Short Stories Hotel, a gathering spot for both guests and locals. With a private dining area, courtyard lounge, and European-inspired design elements, it feels like a hidden garden set amidst the bustling area. The bar offers a fresh take on mixology with creative cocktails and a menu of shareable American classics. A few of my favorites from the menu are the Cucumber and Avacado, which is this amazingly fresh and delicious salad, along with the Short Stories Burger. When it comes to my cocktail of choice, I rotate between the Rocking Horse Winner, Ordinary Madness and Slow Days Fast Company. They are each fantastic in their own right.

Short Stories Hotel is the first hotel developed, owned, and independently operated by Grifka Group, and is a very special project to me. From opening day, we’ve sought to bring back the essence of old-school hospitality by making every guest feel important. Guests can expect to have a welcome drink waiting for them on arrival, be walked to their room by the hotel team and enjoy other personal touches throughout their stay. We even do turn-down service, which is a rare touch for a boutique hotel of this size. It’s all those little details that really make a difference and enhance the overall guest experience.

There are plans to expand the Short Stories brand as well, which we will be announcing soon!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
When I’m not working, I’m spending time with my family. They encourage and drive me to do the best in life.
