Hidden Gems: Meet Laura Thomas Mullen of Sotheby’s International Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Thomas Mullen.

Hi laura , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to Los Angeles from New York City to pursue a career as a buyer for a retail store, but my path quickly evolved into television production, where I worked on shows like Hard Copy, E! True Hollywood Story, and Blind Date. Wanting a new challenge and being able to work for myself, I co-founded a travel goods line that sold in stores nationwide and was featured on The Today Show and in Oprah Magazine.
After starting a family, I sought a career that offered greater flexibility and financial growth — which led me to real estate. I’ve now been a Realtor with Sotheby’s International Realty for over 11 years, helping clients buy and sell homes across Los Angeles. My background in media, branding, and retail gives me a unique edge in marketing properties, negotiating deals, and guiding my clients with the purchases of their homes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I work with both buyers and sellers, and I’m incredibly grateful that most of my business comes through referrals. That said, working for yourself isn’t always easy. There’s no guaranteed paycheck, you’re constantly hustling for new listings and clients, and much of the work happens before you ever get paid. I have worked with some clients for over two years before they had found a home. It’s unpredictable and, at times, stressful—but I truly love helping people buy or sell their homes, and that passion keeps me going.
With a background in media, product marketing, and entrepreneurship, I bring a unique perspective to every transaction. Whether I’m working with a first-time buyer or a seasoned seller, I approach each relationship with honesty, creativity, and a deep commitment to getting results.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a Los Angeles-based Realtor with a deep focus on neighborhoods like Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Hollywood, Echo Park, and surrounding areas. My reach has extended from the Westside in Santa Monica to as far east as Covina, always driven by a commitment to help my clients find the right home—wherever that may be. While many agents say they specialize in finding the “right” home, I truly invest the time to get to know each client—their lifestyle, goals, and non-negotiables. Real estate is rarely a straight path, but I pride myself on guiding people through every step of the journey with clarity, patience, and strategy. My clients often return for future transactions and refer me to their friends and family—something I’m deeply proud of.
Real estate is a competitive business, and I thrive in that environment. I’ve consistently been a top agent in my office and have a strong track record of winning in multiple-offer situations thanks to thoughtful deal-making and creative problem-solving.
Over the years, I’ve also mentored three agents who have gone on to build successful careers of their own. Supporting others in achieving their goals—whether clients or colleagues—is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
At the end of the day, I love my job. Helping people find their place in the world—whether it’s a first home, a dream home, or a smart investment—is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve had the privilege of mentoring others, and I believe the best mentor-mentee relationships come from mutual respect—when you genuinely appreciate someone’s work ethic and achievements. I also look to my own manager for guidance, drawing inspiration from their strategies and approach. I’m a strong believer in the value of commitment: sticking with something, learning as you go, and always putting in your best effort.
