Hidden Gems: Meet Katie Nenneker of NENN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Nenneker.

Hi Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began with a love of horses. At five years old, I started taking riding lessons at Foxfield Riding School in Westlake Village, California, and my passion for the equestrian world ultimately inspired my interest in veterinary medicine. I went on to earn my Bachelor of Science in Pre-Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis in Animal Science from California State University, Fresno. While at Fresno State, I had the privilege of serving in a leadership role on the NCAA Equestrian Team and received the inaugural “Bulldog of the Year” award, recognizing a student-athlete who exemplifies athletic performance, academic achievement, and community service.

I completed my veterinary degree at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. I was honored to graduate in 2015 from what was then ranked the fourth-best veterinary school in the world. During my studies, I focused on equine and large-animal medicine and served as co-president of the Community Outreach Club as well as secretary of the Diversity Club.

Following graduation, I completed a one-year internship at West Coast Equine in Somis, where I gained extensive experience in internal medicine, surgery, and ambulatory care. I then spent five years working as a field veterinarian in private practice, during which I was inspired to broaden the services I offered and expand the species I cared for.

In 2019, Greg Marx, Nenn equine CEO, and I founded Nenn Equine with the goal of providing exceptional large-animal veterinary care to communities in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Since then, the practice has grown and evolved into the primary ambulatory equine and farm-animal service in both counties, and I’m incredibly proud of the impact our team has made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My drive and passion have always pushed me to grow in my career and develop new skills to better serve my patients. That same determination led me to become a practice owner—an incredibly rewarding step, but one that comes with constant challenges that ultimately become opportunities to learn and grow.

The veterinary profession itself has its own unique struggles. It’s a career that can be both profoundly fulfilling and emotionally demanding. We form deep connections with the animals we treat, and we carry the weight of helping families through some of their most difficult moments.

Long hours, emergency calls, and the responsibility of making urgent, high-stakes decisions all take a toll. In large-animal medicine specifically, the physical demands are significant—longdays out in the field, unpredictable environments, and the reality that fewer veterinarians are choosing this specialty, which places additional pressure on those who remain.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
NENN is a modern, mobile veterinary practice dedicated to delivering exceptional animal care directly to your farm, barn, or home. Founded in 2019, we set out to rethink what veterinary care could look like—prioritizing convenience, compassion, and high-quality medicine across a wide range of species. Today, we proudly serve horses, livestock, and companion animals with the same level of expertise and individualized attention.

We specialize in comprehensive equine care—including dentistry, lameness evaluations, diagnostics, performance-horse management, wellness, and emergency services—while also offering a full suite of veterinary support for farm animals and pets. By bringing advanced comprehensive care to our clients, we reduce stress on animals, while delivering the highest standards of treatment, and build deep and trusted relationships with the families and farms we serve.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of our commitment to veterinary excellence and continuity of care, through our professionalism, integrity, and long-term partnership with our clients, and their animals.

Due to the existing critical shortage of large animal veterinarians, our mission is not only to elevate the lives of the animals we treat, but also to support the future of veterinary medicine. Through our NENNtorship program, fully funded by our NENN Foundation, we invest in educating and empowering the next generation of veterinary professionals—supporting the sustainability of rural and mixed-animal veterinary care. Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to trust my moral compass and stand firmly by it.

Nothing is more essential than maintaining strong ethical principles, they guide not only who I am, but also the high standards I expect for my business.
