Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Morgan.
Kate, please introduce yourself to our readers. How you got to where you are today, both personally and professionally.
I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I remember so clearly when I was a little girl, my dad cycling from the countryside in England to London (over an hour door to door), in the depth of winter (cold, rainy, miserable weather!) because we didn’t have money to put gas in the car. He was a police officer working a night shift. I remember feeling really guilty for spending the 50p I had earlier that day; had I known the struggles of my parents, I would have given it to my dad! (50p wouldn’t get you far, mind you! But maybe a drop of gas in the car?)
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Bumps in the road are important. They force you to stop, reflect, regroup and rethink how to proceed. Whenever an obstacle occurs, which they do, and they always will as long as you are running a business; it’s how you react to said obstacle that is important, not what the *actual* road bump is itself.
For example: I had a baby in 2017. I was thrown into solo parenthood (< the ‘solo parent’ part was unplanned), my family live the other side of the world and were not around to help, I still had clients to tend to, staff to manage, AND, a newborn. That year taught me how to be resilient, nimble, to pivot, to learn that your business structure can adapt to fit your needs and everyone CAN win.
That year, despite navigating parenthood totally alone, I had a growth year for the business. And the year after that. And the year after that! My business flourished when my initial reaction was: what am I going to do?! How can I solo parent and work full time?!
But, I did it all! I was a present mother, I did not let my business slip in any regard. The proof is in the pudding. Stay true to your values, your work ethic, and commitment to excellence – and you’ll find the path that works for you.
As you know, we’re big fans of Morgan Publicity. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Morgan Publicity offers a bespoke and tailored service for their clients to define strategic objectives and to deliver measurable results in the media and the marketplace. We are proudly a cultured agency, who excels at press and media relations, product placement, brand building, event sourcing, event management, celebrity endorsements, and copywriting.
While we are firmly rooted in Los Angeles, New York and London, the agency’s reach is global. The team has strong relationships with media and industry insiders across the globe.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Oh yes.
Know when to read the room and shut the f-up. Clients often have expectations, which is fine and reasonable, but it is on us as PR experts, to know when to pull back from all pitching and explain to our clients ‘why’.
When the world feels heavy, scary and troubling – does this editor really need to know about this new lip balm? No, it can wait. It can be revisited when the timing feels more appropriate.
Also, know when your team needs mental health days. It’s an assault on the soul to watch horrendous acts unfold, and we’ve collectively had to live through and witness so much, that is hard to compute at times. The approach from our agency: if you need a moment to step back, take it. We are all human.
