Hidden Gems: Meet John Beach of Dolce Blooms

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Beach. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Many of us have an intuitive sense of what we want to do with our lives. However, hearing that inner voice and acting on it are two very different things. Jamie Correa, owner and head florist of Dolce Blooms, always knew he had a strong passion for floral design. When he looked at different flowers, he would envision creative and innovative ways to combine their colors, textures, and scents. Above all, he wanted to bring happiness to people’s lives through his creations.

Despite having no formal floral design training, Jamie had studied under another florist for many years, taking notes and dreaming of starting his own business. In late 2015, he took a leap of faith and began Dolce Blooms out of a small, rented garage in Valley Village.

The first few years were a challenge, as Jamie had to balance his creativity with good business practices. He had bitten off more than he could chew during his first Valentine’s Day as a solo florist, but he never lost sight of his goal. Seeing his clients’ joy and satisfaction with his arrangements reaffirmed his belief that he was on the right path. Slowly but surely, Dolce Blooms began to take root, and by 2019, the business was starting to blossom.

Jamie soon realized that his small garage was no longer sufficient for his growing business. In late 2019, he teamed up with John Beach, an experienced retail and restaurant manager, and Dolce Blooms opened its first brick-and-mortar in Tujunga Village of Studio City. It quickly became the go-to destination for community members to browse and enjoy the diverse selection of flowers, gifts, and engage with friends. Dolce Blooms is now a thriving member of the community, hosting events of all kinds and delivering fresh flowers daily. It’s easy to see why Dolce Blooms has become a part of so many people’s weekly routines.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Transitioning from operating completely online to opening our first storefront had an array of challenges all small businesses encounter: hiring employees, buying the right signage and lighting, best way to display products… the list goes on and on. Eventually, you find your groove though. Now add to those inevitable growing pains the stress of having to open the store in the beginning of what became a global pandemic, you can imagine how difficult it was to find our footing and remain operational during such an unprecedented time. But it forced us to adapt and learn quickly. We actually look back on those challenging times fondly as we now think about everything we learned.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dolce Blooms?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
John Beach, Chief Operations Officer: Opening the storefront (especially at the onset of the pandemic) was a huge risk but one we knew we needed to take in order to grow. I tend to be very pragmatic. But Jamie and I really came together to put the right ingredients in the pot and make the soup taste good. Dolce Blooms was never going to grow without taking the natural next step of transitioning from a completely online storefront to opening our doors to the public. Definitely challenging, thoroughly exciting, and very much a success. I can’t wait to see what we do next.
