Hidden Gems: Meet Jennifer Jasmin of Jasmin Psychology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Jasmin.

Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Over the last 20 years, I have been continuously exploring. I have lived in 2 countries and five cities, having 6 degrees along the way to get where I am today. Being a foreigner in a culturally alien education environment, I have had to learn to adapt quickly and to believe in myself in order to achieve my goals. I grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia and came to the United States when I was 18 years old.

Soon after my arrival to the US, I started community college. At the time my English was base-level at best, however it was a smooth adjustment for me once I got into it. I have always enjoyed trying new things and learning about the new cultures, so I was excited to be in the States to advance my studies. I majored in Business Finance as my undergraduate study. I was going to pursue a master’s degree in Business to earn an MBA but I was suddenly reluctant to continue to do so. My passion for it just wasn’t there. I went back to community college and decided to take Psychology classes. I finally found what I love and was then very eager to pursue my Master’s in Psychology. Eventually, I moved to another city to continue my studies and went on to Grad School for Clinical Psychology. Soon after I earned my masters in Clinical Psychology, I was on the move again and pursued my doctoral degree in Organizational Development Psychology. After graduation I decided to move to Los Angeles to focus on my career, working at a local hospital and eventually leading to me opening up my own private practice here in Beverly Hills.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I know that people really love an overcoming adversity story, but fortunately for me the road to where I am today hasn’t been too smooth or too bumpy. I am stubbornly focused on achieving my goals so I managed the challenges along the way by learning to adapt quickly and just don’t give up. It wasn’t easy to find my passion and it took me a while to get to where I am today. During my school years, I decided to change my majors a few times, from Computer Science to Business Finance before finally landing on Psychology. Once I chose Psychology, I was still unsure which path within Psychology was my passion. I started to look into Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology and Industrial/Organizational Psychology more deeply. I really struggled to decide, so I just continued with my studies and waited for the path to show itself to me. Before I knew it, I had earned two master’s degrees (Clinical Psychology and Organizational Psychology) and a doctoral degree (Organizational Development Psychology). Even then it really wasn’t until I worked in a hospital setting where I could finally determine what I wanted to do with my career. Ultimately, I was looking for a rewarding and fulfilling job.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Jasmin Psychology?
Jasmin Psychology is a cultural private practice located in Beverly Hills, California. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with an Organizational Psychology background. I provide Psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, and children. I offer individual therapy, couples therapy, as well as family therapy. In my practice, I combine Cognitive Behavioral techniques with a Solutions-Focused approach to treat anxiety and depression, as well as to help my clients find a work-life balance. I have a doctoral degree in Organizational Psychology and published a research paper on the subject of female leaders and their work-life balance across two cultures, diving into issues such as collectivistic and individualistic cultures. I integrate all of my knowledge and skills to help people restructure their thoughts and help overcome their fear and guilt. I accept major insurance plans and also operate as an “out of network” provider.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
My goal is to open a group practice and to bring more awareness of mental health issues and therapy options in my own culture, where therapy is taboo, uncommon and generally unrecognized. I want to explore classical Psychological methods while embracing the latest trends and developments in the field to bring my clients the most complete care service available.
