Hidden Gems: Meet Jared Uy of Makers & Finders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Uy.

Jared Uy

Hi Jared, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At 18, I launched my career in the food and beverage industry by taking on a host role at Sake Sushi Bar & Lounge in Glendale, CA. Through my dedication and hard work, I was able to progress to a management position, further cultivating my enthusiasm for leading and inspiring individuals.

To further expand my knowledge, I ventured to Las Vegas, a hub for the hospitality industry, when I was twenty-one. Sadly, I quickly found that the delight I had once felt in this industry was beginning to dissipate, so I found an entry-level role as a host at Makers & Finders, a brunch spot that specializes in Latin Comfort Food and Specialty Coffee. However, upon meeting the owners and learning of their vision, the thrill I’d experienced as a young host reignited. Intrigued, I took up their offer to join the management team and have since worked for the company for four years, the last two of which I’ve served as Director of Operations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout the past several years, I’ve discovered that nothing is ever simple. As the entire planet encountered one of the worst trials of my lifetime – the COVID-19 pandemic – it served as an invaluable lesson for everyone. I believe those in the hospitality industry suffered particularly acutely. Even now, we are still having to make adjustments in regard to recruitment, wages, etc. Nonetheless, I’ve grown more proficient at being flexible and adapting to these sorts of challenges.

As you know, we’re big fans of Makers & Finders. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
On July 27, 1984, 2 individuals embarked on the American dream when they got married and immigrated from Colombia. After settling in NYC and having three children, they relocated to Las Vegas in 1998 to take their dream to the next level.

Fueled by the determination of his parents, Josh Molina, co-founder and CEO of Makers & Finders, had a vision: to develop a culinary and coffee-oriented concept that blended together some of his beloved dishes from all throughout Latin America. His idea was to construct an easy-to-navigate menu including Arepas and Empanadas, two of the most widely enjoyed foods in the region.

Makers & Finders is the embodiment of their hard work and sacrifice. Brightly lit and decorated with unique murals and inspiring affirmations, this vibrant restaurant-coffee-bar is the epitome of Latin culture and provides a full-service experience. All ingredients in-house are handmade, offering a truly unique menu and, since 2014, the Molina family has opened five establishments in Las Vegas.

Having the good fortune of becoming a member of this organization, I have been able to improve my aptitude in leadership and professional development. Moreover, I have also attained proficiency in coffee-making, culinary arts, and cocktail mixology.

I take pride in my capabilities of learning and adjusting quickly. I’ve actually been known to be a “jack of all trades” in my time here. Although it is challenging, I feel highly contented with my accomplishment.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
