Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Dilorinzo.
Hi Frances, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I believe my career in comedy found me instead of me finding my career!
My career actually began with a required speech class as a freshman in college and being willing to take a chance of being funny. That was a risk I wasn’t willing to take in high school because I feared looking stupid and being judged. But in college, I was anonymous and that gave me liberty! I added humor to my work, was recruited onto the speech team and took the Gold medal in California two years in a row. After that, my coaches and teammates encouraged me to hit the comedy clubs and the rest is history.
I networked my way into clubs, eventually performing for colleges, some television, cruises and then came YouTube. Youtube lead me to my biggest joy as a standup comedian, it leads me to a fan I never imagined, Warren Buffett. He was a fan of my videos and I eventually performed in Omaha meeting the Oracle himself. Who would have imagined we hit it off as if we’ve known each other our entire lives and to this day, we remain great friends!
While traveling the world making people laugh, I also juggled the joy of motherhood. Blessed with a husband that was my biggest supporter, I was able to manage my career and my boys which lead to the birth of my agency. I discovered that I could produce high end comedy shows for private venues and clubs putting both myself and fellow comics to work when they were in town taking a break from the road. To this day, I love being a woman-owned business and thrilled to support fellow comics.
I am proud to say I own and run Comedy Entertainment, Orange Counties premier agency for stand up comedy. Personally, I am proud to live by my motto that “Smart women don’t have to be stuffy!”
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to your dreams is never smooth, but along the way you learn not to let the bumps bother you as much. The frustrations I worked through was as becoming more consistent on stage. I had a big awakening when I began working with celebrity comedians and noticed that even at that level, they would have on and off nights. So I realized this is part of the package, but the trick would be to have many more of the fantastic nights than the difficult ones.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Comedy Entertainment is a talent agency specializing in private shows for country clubs, community venues, and private and corporate events. Being woman-owned and run by a professional stand-up comedian myself makes this a very trustworthy agency in booking the talent that is appropriate for the event. Not all comedy is the right mix, and great detail goes into knowing the audience before booking the talent!!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is absolutely critical and yet for me, it is difficult to do. I walk the line of being very cautious and courageous! I am unafraid to speak my mind, to call people who seem unreachable and because of this, I have connections and a network I could have only dreamed of. I tend to be more careful with spending and at times, I have to push myself to take an investment leap.
