Hidden Gems: Meet Emily Martorano of Emily Morgan Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Martorano.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a household where I learned the value and importance of food and nutrition both in the kitchen and at the dining table. My mom had always been passionate about living a healthy, balanced lifestyle and she instilled those values into my life from an early age. Attending college in rural Delaware is where I soon learned that growing up in a health-forward household was not common. In fact, the majority of people I met had either developed a unhealthy relationship with food or had very limited nutrition knowledge. I decided then and there that my passion was to help others learn the importance and value of nutrition and health, just like I had the privilege of developing from a young age. I became a Registered Dietitian and shortly after, I started my virtual private practice, Emily Morgan Nutrition. My mission is to help transform clients’ relationships with food and nutrition – helping them gain the strength and knowledge to make peace with food and improve their health, weight and body image.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Becoming a dietitian is anything but a smooth road. In fact, the process to become a dietitian has become extremely competitive, expensive and limiting to many – especially minority groups and BIPOC. During college, it wasn’t until the end of my sophomore year where I learned the great lengths it would take for me to become a dietitian – including applying for a competitive, unpaid rotational internship program, graduate school and a registrational exam. I was lucky enough to have helpful professors and college counselors who were able to get me on track and guide me through the process, but shortly after graduating, I learned that most universities do not offer that type of guidance and many nutrition/dietetics students struggle to become a Dietitian. It was because of this that I decided to build a program that helps guide students through the entire process of becoming a dietitian. Through this, I have been able to make it more clear and manageable for future dietitians to make their dreams a reality.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Emily Morgan Nutrition was founded in 2021 by Emily Martorano. I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with multiple years of experience working in various practices and hospitals, including NYU Langone and Stanford Health Care. I provide nutrition coaching to motivated individuals who are looking to improve their relationship with food and nutrition, as well as improving their health, weight and body image. I provide knowledge, unlimited support and guidance to my clients to help them gain the strength and knowledge to make peace with food and improve their health. I also provide medical nutrition therapy for a wide range of medical conditions; including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, and digestive disorders. The end goal with all of my clients is they rediscover their relationship with food & nutrition and gain the skills to listen to their body’s internal cues & nurture themselves through satisfying and energizing foods. The end result – a positive relationship between them, their body, and their diet, while improving their overall health.

As well as providing nutrition coaching, I also offer student mentorship services geared toward students looking to become dietitians. Services include resume creation, creating/reviewing DICAS applications, personal statement review and interview prep! Through the mentorship program, I have been able to make it more clear and manageable for future dietitians to make their dreams a reality. It is always rewarding to help a future dietitian get into their #1 dietetic internship program!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Network like crazy, always say yes to experiences and be a sponge! A college professor used to say, “be like a sponge and absorb everything around you, no matter how irrelevant it may seem to your field.” And this has stuck with me throughout my career. Never, ever close off the ability to learn something new. At the end of the day, you don’t know when that knowledge may be resourceful. When I first started out in creating a business, I spent a lot of time thinking, researching, preparing but not a lot of time of just DOING. Looking back, I would’ve dived into creating my business even if I didn’t feel 100% ready or prepared. You learn as you do, and when issues come up you address them. As much as you can research and prepare ahead of time, you learn way more by doing.
