Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jerrel Emery.
Hi Dr. Jerrel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I went to medical school at Loma Linda University in San Bernardino, California. After finishing my training there, I chose to specialize in OB-GYN and completed my residency in Houston, Texas, at a small hospital. It was a great learning experience and a solid foundation for what would become a winding but rewarding career.
After residency, I moved down to San Diego, where I joined a multi-member OB-GYN group in La Mesa, California. That’s where I met my wife. She used to be an OB-GYN nurse, working in labor and delivery. We met while I was delivering babies—our paths crossed in a very natural way. We started dating, and through her family, we were introduced to Amway. We got involved, built a large business, and were doing so well that I was able to step away from practicing medicine for a few years.
Eventually, though, our Amway group fell apart, and I found myself needing to return to the workforce. I started doing medical health assessments for health insurance companies, which opened the door to a position as a medical director for a chain of aesthetic clinics. I ended up overseeing ten clinics, driving daily throughout California—including all the way up to Northern California.
After about four or five years, that company went out of business, and once again, I was back on the job hunt. But I didn’t want to waste what I had learned. I took all the skills I gained in aesthetics and decided to start my own medical spa.
It was slow at first. I added services gradually—Botox, fillers, laser hair removal—and eventually began offering bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which was a great fit given my OB-GYN background. The business steadily grew, and I opened a second office in Temecula, while my first one in La Mesa continued to thrive.
Now, after ten years in this space, I’ve built a strong practice where people come to me specifically for specialized injections, lip enhancements, and hormone therapy. Each chapter of my career—whether in traditional medicine, business, or aesthetics—has led naturally to the next.
Looking back, I can honestly say that every step, every detour, and every reinvention has brought me to where I am today. And I’m thankful for that journey. Who knows where the next chapter will take me? But I’m excited to find out.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When someone asked me what the biggest obstacle I had to overcome in life was, the answer was easy—but getting through it was anything but. I grew up very shy. I was terrified of talking to women, afraid to date, and deeply self-conscious in social situations. For someone like me, the idea of becoming an OB-GYN seemed completely out of the question. And yet, ironically, it was during my OB-GYN rotation in medical school—the one I expected to dread—that I found the most joy. It was the most fun I had during medical training, and that’s how I chose my specialty.
Still, the shyness lingered, and I knew I needed to overcome it to succeed not only in medicine but in life. That’s when Amway came into the picture. My wife and I got involved through her family, and the business didn’t just bring financial success—it transformed me as a person. Amway encouraged a culture of personal development, and I dove headfirst into it. I must have read over a hundred self-help books—titles like How to Win Friends and Influence People, Think and Grow Rich, and countless others.
But reading wasn’t enough. The real transformation came from the action the business required. I had to meet people, go into their homes, and give presentations—first one-on-one, then to small groups. Gradually, those groups got bigger: ten people, then fifty, then a hundred. Eventually, I found myself standing in front of a crowd of a thousand people, and later, speaking to even more—up to a hundred thousand in a massive arena.
If you had told the shy kid I once was that he’d be speaking in front of 25 people someday, he would’ve laughed—or panicked. But through consistent growth, pushing beyond fear, and immersing myself in challenges, I learned to break through that shell.
Looking back, I can say that Amway didn’t just change my financial life—it changed me. The skills I gained, the confidence I developed, and the fear I overcame all stemmed from those formative years. And it’s those lessons that have carried me forward through every chapter since—whether in medicine, entrepreneurship, or leadership.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
For Dr. J Emery, better known to many of his patients as “Dr. J,” the journey from a successful career in obstetrics and gynecology to founding one of Southern California’s premier medical spas was born from a deep passion for wellness, aesthetics, and patient care.
After many years as an OB-GYN, Dr. Emery built an extensive foundation in women’s health and hormone management—expertise that seamlessly transitioned into the world of regenerative and aesthetic medicine. Recognizing a growing need for personalized, medically guided treatments that help patients not only look better but feel their absolute best, he opened Dr. J’s Med Spa—a family-owned practice with two thriving locations: one in Temecula, close to his home, and another in La Mesa, serving the greater San Diego area.
At Dr. J’s Med Spa, clients can access a wide range of cutting-edge services, including Botox, Juvederm fillers, Sculptra, CoolSculpting, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy, laser hair removal, and IV therapy. One of the core pillars of the practice is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and medical weight loss—personalized services grounded in lab work, expert analysis, and Dr. Emery’s deep clinical experience.
“My work has always been rooted in helping people live healthier, more confident lives,” Dr. Emery says. “With hormone therapy and blood work, I can tailor programs that bring patients back into balance, often transforming their energy, mood, and well-being.”
Dr. Emery’s lip filler techniques have become especially popular, earning him a reputation that extends far beyond California. Patients frequently travel from out of state to receive his expert touch—testament to the care, precision, and natural results that define his aesthetic philosophy.
What sets Dr. J’s Med Spa apart is not just the menu of services, but the personalized approach and strong patient relationships nurtured by Dr. Emery and his team. “We’ve grown almost entirely through word of mouth and social media,” he shares. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our patients share their transformations and refer their loved ones.”
Whether you’re seeking aesthetic rejuvenation or a renewed sense of vitality through hormone therapy, Dr. J’s Med Spa offers a welcoming, expert-led environment. “We’d love the chance to meet you,” says Dr. Emery. “A complimentary consultation is the first step—and from there, we create a plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.”
With compassion, clinical skill, and an artist’s eye, Dr. J Emery continues to redefine what it means to look and feel your best—one patient at a time.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
“Don’t wait for opportunity—go create it.”
Dr. Emery recommends starting by reaching out to local clinics and inquiring about shadowing opportunities with experienced providers. “It’s one of the most direct and effective ways to gain insight into the field and begin building connections,” he says.
Another key step? Education and networking. “I took a Palette course early on, which was a great way to meet others in the aesthetics world,” he shares. “From there, I connected with product reps—like those from Allergan for Botox—and those relationships became foundational for launching my practice.”
But technical skill is only part of the equation. According to Dr. Emery, community involvement and local engagement are just as important. “Growing a successful practice also comes from being active in your local area—supporting small businesses, attending community events, and building a genuine social media presence,” he says. “People want to work with someone they know and trust.”
Whether you’re just starting or looking to expand your reach, Dr. J’s approach offers a grounded, people-first path into the fast-growing world of aesthetic medicine.
