Today, we’d like to introduce you to Diana Hufford-Green.
Hi Diana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working as a slow-motion, high-intensity strength training instructor in 2009. A friend of mine invited me to try out a workout with her, and I fell in love with it. It turns out that the studio where she was working was looking for more instructors, and I was looking for a new, more rewarding career, so I jumped into the instructor training program.
After earning my instructor certification, I ran my own business out of another person’s studio until Covid shut it down permanently in June 2020. At that point, the options were either to dissolve my business into someone else’s and give up half of my income or finally open my own studio and grow my business into something more.
I took the risk and decided on the latter option. I got a loan through the Small Business Association and purchased the equipment I needed, found a retail space to lease, and started putting a plan together. In June 2021, The Workout Revolution officially opened our doors in Studio City, CA!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been bumps in the road! I was lucky that I had clients who followed me from my previous business, so I knew I could pay my bills from day one.
However, I was a new business opening up only a few months after gyms were able to open up legally again in Los Angeles. People were scared to go back into the gym, and we had to follow a lot of safety protocols in order to operate and attract new clients. And I did it all by myself for the first year. I’m grateful I had friends and mentors to advise me, but being both the business owner and the only instructor was a challenge in time and energy management.
The other major struggle I’ve had was when a major competitor decided to open up a studio 200 feet away. It has created a lot of brand confusion, but luckily, we have continued to thrive in spite of it.
We’ve been impressed with The Workout Revolution, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Workout Revolution is a boutique fitness studio in Studio City, CA. We specialize in one-on-one, slow-motion, high-intensity strength training. This type of slow strength training is one of the safest, most effective, and time-efficient forms of exercise.
The complete, total body workout lasts only 20-25 minutes and is typically done once or twice a week. Exercise to the intensity of muscle failure (the point at which you can no longer move the weight) will thoroughly exhaust your muscles and create a stimulus to which your body must adapt. All of our workouts are customized specifically for each client and include nutrition suggestions (if requested) and post-exercise rest and recovery recommendations.
Our clients love that our studio is clean and quiet. All workouts are one-on-one and take place in a private or semi-private environment. At most, there are only two clients working out with their instructors at any one time.
I think that one thing that sets us apart from others is the quality of care we provide to our instructors. I have really taken my time and hired instructors who care about others, are eager to learn, have a team mentality, and love teaching. I am incredibly proud of my team and their ability to help our clients achieve their goals.
How do you think about luck?
They say luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity… I truly believe that this will be true in my life and business.
I had years of running my personal training business under my belt when the opportunity to open my own fitness studio revealed itself. Without that preparation, I wouldn’t have been ready for the opportunity.
