Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
First off, thank you for having me and allowing me to share my story! My name is Chelsea, but some may call me Chelly and I am a Toronto-based creative and founder of a purposeful production company, Edify Studios.
Growing up, I was often glued to the TV, watching, The Oprah Winfrey Show and America’s Next Top Model, and that is where I quickly discovered my passion for fashion and love for story-telling.
Fast forward, I attended university and became a Journalism major with an honours BAA in Media Studies. In 2017, while in school, I launched my blog, “Chelly in the City,” where I blogged about fashion and food on a budget. This became my creative outlet and kept me inspired.
I began implementing video content such as lookbooks, showcasing a variety of outfits I styled, and other fun videos surrounding my finds whenever I would go shopping.
Two years later, I launched “Her Excellence,” a raw and authentic interview series which highlights excellent women doing excellent things, on my blog. I always yearned to do interviews and connect with people on a deeper level or, what I would like to say: “beyond-the-Instagram-grid,” and I felt like the series allowed me to do just that. From film to fashion and social media to fitness, I had the privilege of interviewing women at the top of their game and I’m just so honoured. Not to mention, it warmed my heart when people would reach out say, “hey, I really enjoy your interviews, they’re not cookie-cutter, you really go there!”
Although I don’t blog or do written interviews anymore, I enjoy creating content for Instagram and TikTok, in addition to working on my production company.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it has not been a smooth road! I tend to get in my head, doubt the content that I am creating, and worry about what people may think. This has led to me being stagnant and not being consistent with my content, but we are working on it! Thank God for therapy! *laughs*
As you know, we’re big fans of Edify Studios. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Of course! Edify Studios is a production company that aims to uplift and inspire viewers through purposeful content. I launched it this year and I’ve learned a lot along the way!
To give you a backstory, in 2020, I was catching up with a friend and we were just talking about our upcoming projects and what we wanted to do next. I kid you not, the idea of me having my own production company popped into my head and I said to my friend, “sis, I should start a production company,” and she’s like: “you absolutely should!”
At this time, I was in the middle of deciding whether or not I was going to launch my own YouTube channel as an extension of Chelly in the City, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the production company idea. I prayed about it and then got the confirmation to start and I’ve been building it ever since!
Although it’s been a slow-moving journey, I look forward to expanding the company in 2023 and continuing to launch our creative yet impactful projects.
