Hi Caitlin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with flowers as a teenager working in my neighbor’s flower garden and have worked with flowers ever since. I started The Velvet Poppy in 2018 while living abroad in Prague, Czech Republic. I started as a freelance designer and only working on events; then during the pandemic, I opened up my website to local deliveries since events were on hold and people wanted to send gifts to one another while not being able to see each other. The opening of The Velvet Poppy Boutique on Silverlake Blvd was in 2020 and is standing strong!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s always been questions of what will happen in the future and slow days, but overall since I started during the pandemic after already having my event business established, there was no place to go but up!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in uniquely beautiful floral designs of both gift arrangements and events of all sorts, especially weddings. We are most proud of our timelessly stunning, high-quality floral arrangements. When my clients see a Velvet Poppy arrangement in person or in photos, they know who made it. We use unique flowers and embrace texture and color. The boutique also offers unique handmade, imported textiles and locally made art pieces from primarily female artists, including the owner’s own handmade pottery.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We have a consistent esthetic to our designs that I have trained my staff. Every arrangement is unique and beautiful, customized for the customer. Local neighbors find The Velvet Poppy boutique to be a refuge of kindness in Silverlake and come in to socialize while shopping and make a ritual of bringing flowers home. Brides and event clients love the ease of working with us combined with our immaculate execution of their vision.
