Hi Beto, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Alberto “Beto” Vilanova
A fourth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with over two decades of immersive training and teaching experience, I embarked on my journey in the vibrant community of Paraisopolis, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Despite facing formidable challenges during my high school years, including the difficult decision to potentially halt my training to support my family when my mother fell ill, my unwavering passion for Jiu-Jitsu persisted.
In 2008, my relentless dedication was rewarded with the honor of earning my Black Belt. Seeking new horizons and growth, I relocated to California in 2010. Balancing training, teaching commitments, and college studies, I achieved remarkable placements in more than six major Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.
My dedication to the sport transcends personal accolades; it is embodied in my role as the founder and owner of Vilanova Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Camarillo, California. Through Vilanova BJJ, I am privileged to share my love for Jiu-Jitsu, inspiring and empowering others within the community. Outside my professional endeavors, I cherish a tranquil life in Camarillo with my wife, Alicia, and our daughter, Amelia, finding joy in the balance of a fulfilling family life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing up in Paraisopolis, Sao Paulo, Brazil, the second-largest favela in the city with over 100,000 residents, was a unique challenge. Nestled next to the affluent Morumbi district, it provided a stark contrast that fueled my determination. My journey was marked by significant hurdles, starting with my childhood and my mother’s illness, which tested our family’s resilience.
Despite these challenges, I found solace and passion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, beginning my training with the unwavering support of my sisters. This passion became my guiding light, leading me to the United States. My path wasn’t without setbacks, including being hurt by someone I admired, but each obstacle only strengthened my resolve.
In the face of adversity, I founded Vilanova BJJ, a testament to perseverance and community spirit. Our academy not only survived the COVID-19 shutdowns but thrived, eventually earning the honor of being recognized as the best business in Camarillo. This journey is a reflection of the resilience and strength inherent in those who rise from Paraisopolis, turning challenges into stepping stones for success.

In 2017, to celebrate my birthday, I embarked on fulfilling my greatest dream as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. With the invaluable support of my sisters, Josy and Alexsandra, we launched Vilanova BJJ Paraisopolis—a transformative social project dedicated to teaching free Jiu-Jitsu to the children and teenagers in my hometown. Together, we are building a stronger community, one empowered young individual at a time.
