Hi Anthony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Anthony Canapi and I’m California’s Professional Gay Matchmaker and Founder of Best Man Matchmaking, an old-school, personal Matchmaking Company for Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Men seeking a long-term, committed relationship and are ready to settle because in a room full of boys, you deserve the, “Best Man”.
I’ve been a Matchmaker for nine years now, professionally for four, and my first ever successful match was when I was 16 years old. It was the rise of the dating apps at that time and my best friend of the time asked if I could look at her dating profile and see how it looked. I will never forget what I told her, verbatim, “It looks like $***”. I remembered telling her we’re taking new photos, did a photoshoot in her backyard, re-doing her dating profile, and doing her swiping for her. We ended up swiping right on this attractive Latino man and talking on the app went to talking on Snapchat to talking virtually on Skype to them dating.
Ever since then, I was just matchmaking and giving dating advice to friends and colleagues for fun. It wasn’t until I was in college pursuing my degree in Television, Film, and Media Studies when I ran into a TV show called “The Millionaire Matchmaker”. I was shocked when I found out that Matchmaking and Date Consulting was a billion-dollar industry and can be a full-on career, especially in Los Angeles.
After a media mentorship I did, I got an internship for a big, reputable, and well-respected matchmaking firm in Beverly Hills all while completing my degree. After my internship, I was hired and brought back as a Trainee Matchmaker and I had to decide after getting my degree, do I pursue matchmaking or do I apply for producer roles for TV, Film, or Media? I chose Matchmaking and I don’t regret my decision and never looked back!
Born and raised in one of the best Metropolitan cities in the world, Los Angeles, I understand how hard dating is as a Gay Man in the city because I have to face it head-on myself; being single for a number of years, dealing with the constant, endless swiping of the dating apps, growing more frustrated in my dating life, unfortunately, it’s not easy.
After years of matching Heterosexual Men and Women, whilst balancing my own dating life, to then utilizing a Gay Matchmaker myself, to then having a close friend of mine getting declined by a local matchmaking firm due to his sexuality, I realized how hard it is for someone like myself to find love, but not only that, I questioned and asked myself, “how many other Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Men are in my position throughout California?” Not only do you have Los Angeles, you have San Francisco, Palm Springs, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Fresno, etc. To add on to that, how many GBTQ+ men throughout the country are in that same position?
I created and founded Best Man Matchmaking in March of 2022, exclusively for Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Men who seek a dating process that’s more old-school, organic, customized, traditional, but most of all, of value. In our world today, GBTQ+ Men should not have to struggle to find love. Best Man Matchmaking understands the struggles and hardships Gay Dating can be and I work with quality men who deserve to be matched with singles of caliber that seek the values and beliefs that align with their own. But overall, they deserve love!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road whatsoever – ahaha!
The biggest struggle that I had along the way was choosing between TV & Film and Matchmaking and which route did I want to pursue not only Full-Time, but as a career after university. Before Matchmaking professionally, I was just doing it for the fun of it because I love helping my friends and colleagues with their dating lives. But outside of that, another passion I had was Production Work and Producing. When I was 10 years old, I was exposed to a video platform called “YouTube”. Ever since then, I grew a love for filming, recording, editing, and creating in the online media space.
During college, I was really having issues finding opportunities in the realm of TV & Film and it wasn’t until I did a mentorship with a Media Company that the opportunity of Matchmaking came to the picture. When I was an intern for the heterosexual matchmaking company I work with now, I grew a love for matchmaking as a job and profession and I asked myself, “Can I see myself doing this?” I said, “yes”. When completing my TV and Film degree, when I told my parents that I’m going to work for this Matchmaking Firm in Beverly Hills and not pursue Film opportunities, my parents were very disappointed and concerned that this was a risk that was not going to pay off; they rather have me pursue tv and film knowing that getting in the industry is just as difficult, but at least there’s more opportunities. So when I told them that I was going to pursue Matchmaking and have my degree as a backup, they were not happy at the time and were scared that I wasn’t in the right mindset.
Now, they’ve admitted to eating their words and are very proud of me- proud of what I accomplished, and are impressed by the number of singles I was able to match.
I don’t regret my decision of choosing Matchmaking over TV & Film; I do miss production work, producing content, and creating stories of course, but I stand by my decision and am happy with where my life is now and excited for how many more GBTQ+ singles I’ll help in the future and where my matchmaking company will go.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Resiliency and Stubbornness- life is going to throw so many obstacles your way and great things don’t come immediately; it takes time, effort, finances, and there’s going to be a lot of risks that do and don’t pay off. As long as you stay focused on your end goal and you stay consistent, the benefits, satisfaction, bliss, and purpose come after. I bring up stubbornness as a quality because people view it as a negative, but realistically, stubbornness makes you persevere and have tenacity. People will doubt your capabilities and stubbornness allows you to stand your ground and prove those who doubt your capabilities wrong. It makes you stronger and builds passion and purpose to what you love doing. If it wasn’t for my stubbornness, I wouldn’t have taken the risks I did.
